Mylar bags
« on: November 12, 2009, 10:28:30 AM »
Has anyone used mylar bags for their food storage? If so can a large bag (5gal. size) be cut down resealed and made into smaller sizes? The reason I as is I want to pack stuff into more useable sizes (enough to feed a family for a day) and you can buy a large bag for $1.80 and the smaller gal. and 1/2 gal. are .87. Whats you opinion (on cutting down bags not my being frugal)?

Depends on what you are storing. While you can cut down bags, I find it more handy to use larger zip lock bags. Items stored must not have any moisture in them. For example, dried beans out of the garden this year, I store in blue jean bags and hang from the rafters in the cabin. Zip locks, I use for rice and pasta.
Then I put the zip locks in metal cans. Hope this helps.
