It's been a good day..
« on: May 31, 2009, 01:59:30 PM »
I gotta say "today was a good day".
It was just too pretty to not got out today. But sadly my 223 Ultra was scopeless as my last one went belly up. So I had to use what I got, mounted up a backup Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40 on it and loaded my backpack up with 60 or so odd rounds of varying loads.
Down by the river I bore sighted around 60yards on a small rock ;D and started plinking. Did some adjustment and got it tuned in close afterward shot a bird at around 120 yards so I didn't think I was doing too bad.
Took a break and tossed a line in a few times and got a few bites.. drank a few brews.. and went on relaxing.
About an hour later I was scaning the fields and giving out a few sharp whisles and saw a head pop up. Wind was blowing so I had to compensate a little, and landed a near 300yard shot to the back of the little groundhogs neck.
Needless to say I am happy, still wish I got it on some paper though ;D
...you gotta love cabin fever medication..
Summer is here

Sounds like ya had a better time that way than settin punchin holes in paper.  I much prefer plinking to shooting targets, just me, to each his own.  DP

Sometimes I believe we all just need to plink a little, gives you spirit I believe and replenishes your fun factor.
I do enjoy punching paper though. Just hate having to switch out scopes.
I am waiting for a Meuller Tactical 6-24x44, I believe it will mate up very well 8)

I am satisfied  ;D
I used an older discontinued Barnes bullet forgot the name of it, TSX I believe  ???, HP's and man they shoot great in my 223. Still didn't do as much damage as I would have expected, in and out. But did it's job.
These and V-Maxs work great.

The TSX's are deer bullets, probably why it didn't do much damage.

Sounds like an awsome day indeed. Sounds like a good little shooter you have as well. A day of doing what you did is what life is all about.

Yeah it took a lot to break her in but man it was worth it. I have taken upwards of 30 groundhogs with it and many other little critters as well.
For some reason i have TSX on the brain, but I just looked at them and they aren't TSX bullets... They are blue Hp's 50gr I am pretty sure, but not Moly coated. It was a coat Branes made up I believe ??? ??? I just can't remember. Natchez had some of the last I believe on sale but they are gone...
O well I know my V-Maxs are performers and get the job done.
I am getting out and shooting my Winter loads, it's the ON season and time to burn up my reloads.
Just wish I could find componets cheaper :-\

Hey I had one of those too   ;D

Needed a break from the recent worries and let a buddy drag me to the range , Took the 44 mag handi , Ruger Target Grey ( 223 of course) the PLR 16 and another buddies Sendero 223 to help him sight it in while he is working out of town over the summer .... While i dont have much in the way of prairie rats ,ground hogs or golphers here in Arky land , The paper was out and the reloads were fresh , over a good day of plinking and BS'n with some fellow gunnies at the range ... The high light was an Identical group to the one i'm loading a pic of that came from my 21.5 gr R7 under a 55 gr Hornady v-max , Yeah Aaron they work awesome in mine too ;)

Good to hear that I'm not the only one out and about enjoying the weather.

Oh that group was @ 100   3 shot group ... Cant really put into words how those iddy biddy groups make me smile , Might need to go watch a feild myself for some black flying rats errr I mean crows ... If them damn ticks dont run me off first that is ..

Congrats. on that 300 yd. shot on whistle pig. Those brewskys must of been a good addition to your other medication. Good shot with a 3-9 sighted on rocks. ;)I spent a day near Denver shooting rocks with a 223 up a mountain side. Great fun. Even got a couple of prairie rats. You had a better day than mulching flower beds. I have a few of those Barnes Burner VLC blue bullets left.
By a river, fishing, shooting birds, rocks, groundhogs, liquid meds. Sounds like  Heaven to me. :) Good for you! I need to adjust my priorities!

Tim- Thanks, you got it, the VLC bullets. We need these back, man my 223 loves them.

Default- Nice group, sounds like a day well spent. I have been a firm believer..and supporter ;D.. of V-Max sence I shot my first one(in which was only bout 5 or 6 years ago) Love them. And I hear ya about the Ticks, it's only the first of June, but they are heavy this year.

Kurt- I have held off long enough on getting one. Everyone loves them and I haven't heard one ill remark yet about them, so my 223 will wear it proudly.

bigvarmint- Thanks. I was leary about mounting it up cause it just doesn't seem to "fit", but it's nice to have a back up in case something goes wrong. The Trophy line has worked well for me. And liquid meds.. like the sound of that 8) I love convincing myself to take a day off and blow some steam. Handi's are great tools for such occasions.

The uncoated 53gr version is available as a closeout item at Barnes.

YES HE IS ,

Tim is a damn DATA Hound after my own heart  ;D

I'm really wanting to try those 53 gr TSX out, so perhaps I can go out this coming deer season... Maybe take me a warm camy blanket and lay out prone on the bi-pod and poke some deers with that Target Grey of mine ( only 1 in 12  I own )

Have heard the Boys chiming in how much they love those 53 gr Triple Shocks .. And I think i could force myself to pay that price , Cause God knows i wont pay some of their other prices for bigger diameter bullets.

Gendoc, glad to hear about those 60 gr. v-max. I wrote down the info Swift One wrote about the Sierra 60 gr HP. he made that 351 yd shot with. I just loaded up a couple 55 Noslers I had laying around to see how well they bore sighted it in this new 223 H.B. I just got. Never shot anything above 55 gr. Been wanting a faster twist for a few years now. Try whichever I can find or both. The blue bullets I have are 40 gr. I put in Hornet cart. Not Bad. I don't know what brand this scope is they put on my 223. 4-12 and not A.O.  ??? just try it and see. :-\
