I think this was a hard decision for her.  The resignation could very well finish her political aspirations however she way have done it for her constituents in Alaska.

Think about it, how affective can her Governorship be with all of the personal attacks and hub-bub that has been going on since the announcement that she was a VP candidate.

And they have not let up on her in the least since the election.  She has scared the crap out of the good old boys on both sides of the isles and her enemies are doing everything within their power to discredit her and try to keep her from gaining any foothold in government where she could make their lives miserable for them.  They know that she is not some puppet that will just follow suit with the status-quo (sp?) of take, take, take from the people.

If she does pursue politics further I believe that it would have to be as a third party independent and she would the middle class conservatives of this country who are sick of thet wo major parties shenanigans to really get behind her.  Are you willing?

Looks like there may be some validity to my speculation that she is stepping down for the good of the State of Alaska.  Like I said before Sarah is a class act IMO.  I hope we will hear from her again.  Maybe a Palin/Paul Presidential run.

SarahPAC - Sarah Palin's Official Leadership PAC

Palin Announces No Second Term

12:00pm AKST - Update from Governor Palin: We'll soon attach info on decision to not seek re-election... this is in Alaska's best interest, my family's happy... it is good, stay tuned.

Hi Alaska, I appreciate speaking directly TO you, the people I serve, as your Governor.

People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska. Serving her people is the greatest honor I could imagine.

I want Alaskans to grasp what can be in store for our state. We were purchased as a territory because a member of President Abe Lincoln's cabinet, William Seward, providentially saw in this great land, vast riches, beauty, strategic placement on the globe, and opportunity. He boldly looked "North to the Future". But he endured such ridicule and mocking for his vision for Alaska, remember the adversaries scoffed, calling this "Seward's Folly". Seward withstood such disdain as he chose the uncomfortable, unconventional, but RIGHT path to secure Alaska, so Alaska could help secure the United States.

People who know me know that besides faith and family, nothing's more important to me than our beloved Alaska.

Alaska's mission - to contribute to America. We're strategic IN the world as the air crossroads OF the world, as a gatekeeper of the continent. Bold visionaries knew this - Alaska would be part of America's great destiny.

Our destiny to be reached by responsibly developing our natural resources. This land, blessed with clean air, water, wildlife, minerals, AND oil and gas. It's energy! God gave us energy.

So to serve the state is a humbling responsibility, because I know in my soul that Alaska is of such import, for America's security, in our very volatile world. And you know me by now, I promised even four years ago to show MY independence... no more conventional "politics as usual".

And we are doing well! My administration's accomplishments speak for themselves. We work tirelessly for Alaskans.

We aggressively and responsibly develop our resources because they were created to be used to better our world... to HELP people... and we protect the environment and Alaskans (the resource owners) foremost with our policies.

Here's some of the things we've done:

We created a petroleum integrity office to oversee safe development. We held the line FOR Alaskans on Point Thomson - and finally for the first time in decades - they're drilling for oil and gas.

We have AGIA, the gasline project - a massive bi-partisan victory (the vote was 58 to 1!) - also succeeding as intended - protecting Alaskans as our clean natural gas will flow to energize us, and America, through a competitive, pro-private sector project. This is the largest private sector energy project, ever. THIS is energy independence.

And ACES - another bipartisan effort - is working as intended and industry is publicly acknowledging its success. Our new oil and gas "clear and equitable formula" is so Alaskans will no longer be taken advantage of. ACES incentivizes NEW exploration and development and JOBS that were previously not going to happen with a monopolized North Slope oil basin.

We cleaned up previously accepted unethical actions; we ushered in bi-partisan Ethics Reform.

We also slowed the rate of government growth, we worked with the Legislature to save billions of dollars for the future, and I made no lobbyist friends with my hundreds of millions of dollars in budget vetoes... but living beyond our means today is irresponsible for tomorrow.

We took government out of the dairy business and put it back into private-sector hands - where it should be.

We provided unprecedented support for education initiatives, and with the right leadership, finally filled long-vacant public safety positions. We built a sub-Cabinet on Climate Change and took heat from Outside special interests for our biologically-sound wildlife management for abundance.

We broke ground on the new prison.

And we made common sense conservative choices to eliminate personal luxuries like the jet, the chef, the junkets... the entourage.

And the Lt. Governor and I said "no" to our pay raises. So much success in this first term - and with this success I am proud to take credit... for hiring the right people! Our goal was to achieve a gasline project, more fair oil and gas valuation, and ethics reform in four years. We did it in two. It's because of the people... good public servants surrounding the Governor's office, with servants' hearts and astounding work ethic... THEY are Alaska's success!

We are doing well! I wish you'd hear MORE from the media of your state's progress and how we tackle Outside interests - daily - SPECIAL interests that would stymie our state. Even those debt-ridden stimulus dollars that would force the heavy hand of federal government into our communities with an "all-knowing attitude" - I have taken the slings and arrows with that unpopular move to veto because I know being right is better than being popular. Some of those dollars would harm Alaska and harm America - I resisted those dollars because of the obscene national debt we're forcing our children to pay, because of today's Big Government spending; it's immoral and doesn't even make economic sense!

Another accomplishment - our Law Department protected states' rights - TWO huge U.S. Supreme Court reversals came down against that liberal Ninth Circuit, deciding in OUR state's favor over the last two weeks. We're protectors of our Constitution - federalists protect states' rights as mandated in 10th amendment.

But you don't hear much of the good stuff in the press anymore, do you?

Some say things changed for me on August 29th last year - the day John McCain tapped me to be his running-mate - I say others changed.

Let me speak to that for a minute.

Political operatives descended on Alaska last August, digging for dirt. The ethics law I championed became their weapon of choice. Over the past nine months I've been accused of all sorts of frivolous ethics violations - such as holding a fish in a photograph, wearing a jacket with a logo on it, and answering reporters' questions.

Every one - all 15 of the ethics complaints have been dismissed. We've won! But it hasn't been cheap - the State has wasted THOUSANDS of hours of YOUR time and shelled out some two million of YOUR dollars to respond to "opposition research" - that's money NOT going to fund teachers or troopers - or safer roads. And this political absurdity, the "politics of personal destruction" ... Todd and I are looking at more than half a million dollars in legal bills in order to set the record straight. And what about the people who offer up these silly accusations? It doesn't cost them a dime so they're not going to stop draining public resources - spending other peoples' money in their game.

It's pretty insane - my staff and I spend most of our day dealing with THIS instead of progressing our state now. I know I promised no more "politics as usual," but THIS isn't what anyone had in mind for ALASKA.

If I have learned one thing: LIFE is about choices!

And one chooses how to react to circumstances. You can choose to engage in things that tear down, or build up. I choose to work very hard on a path for fruitfulness and productivity. I choose NOT to tear down and waste precious time; but to build UP this state and our country, and her industrious, generous, patriotic, free people!

Life is too short to compromise time and resources... it may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down, plod along, and appease those who demand: "Sit down and shut up", but that's the worthless, easy path; that's a quitter's way out. And a problem in our country today is apathy. It would be apathetic to just hunker down and "go with the flow".

Nah, only dead fish "go with the flow".

No. Productive, fulfilled people determine where to put their efforts, choosing to wisely utilize precious time... to BUILD UP.

And there is such a need to BUILD up and FIGHT for our state and our country. I choose to FIGHT for it! And I'll work hard for others who still believe in free enterprise and smaller government; strong national security for our country and support for our troops; energy independence; and for those who will protect freedom and equality and LIFE... I'll work for and campaign for those PROUD to be American, and those who are INSPIRED by our ideals and won't deride them.

I WILL support others who seek to serve, in or out of office, for the RIGHT reasons, and I don't care what party they're in or no party at all. Inside Alaska - or Outside Alaska.

But I won't do it from the Governor's desk.

I've never believed that I, nor anyone else, needs a title to do this - to make a difference... to HELP people. So I choose, for my State and my family, more "freedom" to progress, all the way around... so that Alaska may progress... I will not seek re-election as Governor.

And so as I thought about this announcement that I wouldn't run for re-election and what it means for Alaska, I thought about how much fun some governors have as lame ducks... travel around the state, to the Lower 48 (maybe), overseas on international trade - as so many politicians do. And then I thought - that's what's wrong - many just accept that lame duck status, hit the road, draw the paycheck, and "milk it". I'm not putting Alaska through that - I promised efficiencies and effectiveness! ? That's not how I am wired. I am not wired to operate under the same old "politics as usual." I promised that four years ago - and I meant it.

It's not what is best for Alaska.

I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is unconventional and not so comfortable.

With this announcement that I am not seeking re-election... I've determined it's best to transfer the authority of governor to Lieutenant Governor Parnell; and I am willing to do so, so that this administration - with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future - can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success.

My choice is to take a stand and effect change - not hit our heads against the wall and watch valuable state time and money, millions of your dollars, go down the drain in this new environment. Rather, we know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time, on another scale, and actually make a difference for our priorities - and so we will, for Alaskans and for Americans.

Let me go back to a comfortable analogy for me - sports... basketball. I use it because you're naïve if you don't see the national full-court press picking away right now: A good point guard drives through a full court press, protecting the ball, keeping her eye on the basket... and she knows exactly when to pass the ball so that the team can WIN. And I'm doing that - keeping our eye on the ball that represents sound priorities - smaller government, energy independence, national security, freedom! And I know when it's time to pass the ball - for victory.

I have given my reasons candidly and truthfully... and my last day won't be for another few weeks so the transition will be very smooth. In fact, we will look to swear Sean in - in Fairbanks at the conclusion of our Governor's picnics.

I do not want to disappoint anyone with my decision; all I can ask is that you TRUST me with this decision - but it's no more "politics as usual".

Some Alaskans don't mind wasting public dollars and state time. I do. I cannot stand here as your Governor and allow millions upon millions of our dollars go to waste just so I can hold the title of Governor. And my children won't allow it either. ? Some will question the timing. ? Let's just say, this decision has been in the works for awhile...

In fact, this decision comes after much consideration, and finally polling the most important people in my life - my children (where the count was unanimous... well, in response to asking: "Want me to make a positive difference and fight for ALL our children's future from OUTSIDE the Governor's office?" It was four "yes's" and one "hell yeah!" The "hell yeah" sealed it - and someday I'll talk about the details of that... I think much of it had to do with the kids seeing their baby brother Trig mocked by some pretty mean-spirited adults recently.) Um, by the way, sure wish folks could ever, ever understand that we ALL could learn so much from someone like Trig - I know he needs me, but I need him even more... what a child can offer to set priorities RIGHT - that time is precious... the world needs more "Trigs", not fewer.

My decision was also fortified during this most recent trip to Kosovo and Landstuhl, to visit our wounded soldiers overseas, those who sacrifice themselves in war for OUR freedom and security... we can ALL learn from our selfless Troops... they're bold, they don't give up, they take a stand and know that LIFE is short so they choose to NOT waste time. They choose to be productive and to serve something greater than SELF... and to build up their families, their states, our country. These Troops and their important missions - those are truly the worthy causes in this world and should be the public priority with time and resources and NOT this local / superficial wasteful political bloodsport.

May we ALL learn from them!

*((Gotta put First Things First))*

First things first: as Governor, I love my job and I love Alaska. It hurts to make this choice but I am doing what's best for Alaska. I've explained why... though I think of the saying on my parents' refrigerator that says "Don't explain: your friends don't need it and your enemies won't believe you anyway."

But I have given my reasons... no more "politics as usual" and I am taking my fight for what's right - for Alaska - in a new direction.

Now, despite this, I don't want any Alaskan dissuaded from entering politics after seeing this REAL "climate change" that began in August... no, we NEED hardworking, average Americans fighting for what's right! And I will support you because we need YOU and YOU can effect change, and I can too on the outside.

We need those who will respect our Constitution where government's supposed to serve from the BOTTOM UP, not move toward this TOP DOWN big government take-over... but rather, will be protectors of individual rights - who also have enough common sense to acknowledge when conditions have drastically changed and are willing to call an audible and pass the ball when it's time so the team can win! And that is what I'm doing!

Remember Alaska... America is now, more than ever, looking North to the Future. It'll be good. So God bless you, and from me and my family - to ALL Alaska - you have my heart.

And we will be in the capable hands of our Lieutenant Governor, Sean Parnell. And Lieutenant General Craig Campbell will assume the role of Lieutenant Governor. And it is my promise to you that I will always be standing by, ready to assist. We have a good, positive agenda for Alaska.

In the words of General MacArthur said, "We are not retreating. We are advancing in another direction."

I Like this idea.........................

Sarah Palin Outsmarts the Left

Sarah Palin's resignation as Governor of Alaska is a brilliant liberating move for her career, and a potential turning point for the national conservative movement.

AP
Sarah Palin's resignation as Governor of Alaska is a brilliant liberating move for her career, and a potential turning point for the national conservative movement.

The biggest problem with her responsibility as Governor of Alaska is that the state is so far away from the rest of America. No one hears of the good work she has been doing there, and the left is free to paint their own false caricature of her. And because of the long distance and her family, as well as governing, responsibilities, she can't get down to the lower-48 enough to build her national political presence.

I am hoping she spends two weeks of every month now touring the states doing fundraisers for a the sweeping Republican revival in 2010 that is now developing. I hope she establishes a new national grassroots organization to fight for conservative causes. And I hope she starts a new national think tank in Washington.

She could pick up the mantle for social conservatism for the late Paul Weyrich in Washington, reinvigorating the pro-life cause and defense of traditional values. She could advocate sane, grown up energy policies through these organizations, favoring increased production of traditional as well as alternative energy, including nuclear power, while opposing fruitcake ideas like cap- and-trade taxes, and runaway corporate welfare that would bring back Jimmy Carter's synfuels. She should also lead the nation's mothers to oppose mandating replacement of incandescent light bulbs with the new mercury poison gas bulbs.

Here's hoping as well that she devotes these organizations to advancing the economics of Milton Friedman, Art Laffer, and Jack Kemp, rather than the outdated, failed economics of John Maynard Keynes that Obama advocates as if there was never any alternative. She should also be a new staunch advocate for peace through strength, and rebuilding our nuclear deterrent, rather than Obama's policy of nuclear disarmament. And here's hoping she becomes a powerful new voice for Israel, making new alliances with Jewish voters.

If she does all that, the left won't be making jokes about her any more, just like they stopped joking about Ronald Reagan long about 1984, and Newt Gingrich in 1994.

Peter Ferrara served in the White House Office of Policy Development under President Reagan, and as Associate Deputy Attorney General of the United States under the first President Bush.

I think Palins going to try and strike while the iron is hot (which I don't blame her for).  Palin may not even be relevant in 2012, so she's going to make some big money while she can.

All that long statement from Sarah P. appears to be the usual noncommital political dance. What she does next will tell if she is any different from the rest or if she is just another politician. It would seem that if she would commit to a USVP run, she should have had more in mind than just "the good of Alaska".

how  much  do you think  the REPUBLICANS  would pay  her

not  to run  on  a third party ticket.....insureing  a democratic win

or  just  to stay  out of politics

as  a 3rd  party she  will get  half  the republicans  and  some  dems
as  a republican   she  will get  most  rep votes  and and  fewer  dems

if  she  THREATENS  to run  3rd party........the republicans big wheels  will  fear and respect her

That is a very good point, 45-70 gov. She could be a strong 3rd party candidate.

the  republicans  gave her a tremendous oppertunity

well if there is ever a time for the third party, this would be it.  and in order to pull that off, she would have to start on it NOW.    i have never been a fan of the feasiblity of the 3rd party, but with her on the ticket, i think it might have a chance.

I have mixed feelings about her resignation.  I have been brought up to believe that you don't quit no matter how bad it gets.  I understand that this was hard on her family, but I can't see it being so bad that they couldn't handle it another eighteen months.  ON the other hand if it was costing the state of Alaska and its taxpayer’s money, then I find it very honorable that she would put what is best for her state ahead of her own glory.  It took a lot of courage to openly 'quit' and put herself in a bad light to do what was best for her state.  Unlike the national media I understood her basketball analogy.  She is simply passing the ball to another worthy player.   Now she will be free to sneak up to the goal and maybe even get a slam dunk.  I will have to see how this plays out.  If she quit the governorship to move on to book and tv deals then I will loose a lot of respect Mrs. Palin.  If she moves on to politics on the national level, she will have my vote.

I don’t think we have seen the last of her, she WILL be back!

Stepping down leaves a great opportunity to enhance her national image and get her ideas before the people without being held back by members of the Republican Party.  She should be able to build a big war chest through speeches and appearances; she could not do a lot of this as governor.

Where she is headed remains to be seen, but keep in mind she is a very smart lady and has steered her career in the right direction so far.

When you look at all of the issues that exist in making a credible run at the presidency or national office, it would take from now until 2012 to do the job right - especially if she does go 3rd party.  You need such a vast and complex organization to put that kind of show on the road.
I think if she has any chance at all, she has to take time now to gauge her potency as a candidate, reshape her image because she has been unfairly depicted by much of the media, build a war chest, be the voice of reason as the Obama disaster takes us down the road to poverty and socialism, and "flush out" the Republican situation. IMO she either has to get rid of or transform the good old boy Republican network completely, or leave it completely.  She cannot coexist with what they are now and shouldn't try - she is not of that stripe.

I think she has to run as a third party to have credibility to those undecideds that she would need to win. If she was to run as a republican it would put her on the same level as hillary working for "o" after the way the republican party treated Palin when the election was over.

We cannot judge her resignation without knowing the whole story. If she did resign for the reasons she gave, then I commend her for it, and she hasn't given any reason for us to believe that she is lying.

There have  been a lot of rumblings in the talk shows about the concept of an effective 3rd party. For a while, Rush Limaugh was complaining about republicans almost as much as he has complained about democrats.

Sara is a good Governor, and she puts Alaska first.  She has many enemies that have undertaken to destroy her.  Sara was responsible for many corrupt politicians from both parties, losing their jobs, and some going to prison.  Take a look at the ethic complaints, she is so tied up defending herself against these worthless complaints that she can no longer do her job.  And the attacks on her children.  I have never seen a politicians children so closely watched and lied about.

Sara did the right thing, since she can not concentrate on her job due to forces beyond her control, she turned the job over to Shawn Parnell.  Now at least one would think the complaints would stop, but no they are growing.  The opposition is so scared she might find the time to actually make plans to run for another office, they are ratcheting up the attacks.

One I heard today is that she is heading up the drive for Alaska Secession from the union.  Sorry folks, as much as I would like to see it, Sara does not prescribe to that philosophy.

We have a Senate seat coming up in 2010, held by Lisa Murkowski.  Lisa and her husband was caught in corrupt land deals, but it kind of got forgotten about.  Lisa was appointed to that seat by her father when he was elected Governor.  After finishing out his term, the only opponent she had was a prior democratic governor Tony Knowles.  The people of Alaska were so against Knowles that they sent Lisa back to Washington.  This was truly a case of the lesser of two evils.  Now it's time we got rid of Lisa.  Maybe Sara can go for this spot.  We also have a Democratic Senator, who was elected by corrupt dealings that we need to get rid of as well in 2012.

Frank Murkowski was in the pockets of the oil companies, and trying to broker them a real sweet deal for producing Alaska's Natural Gas, that they had been sitting on for over 30 years.  Sara ran against him in the primary and he only received 3% of the vote.  Sara received some where in the 80s%.

OK we don't like the fact she resigned, but we can understand the reason behind her thinking, and applaude her for it.

I just don't see an Independent ever making it into the WH.
A named third party with candidates for both Houses would be different, getting that party up and running however is not something I can see happening.

It was interesting that RNC leader Steele just said Palin's chances for a presidential run in 2012 were "off the table."

Forgot to mention one thing about Sara.  In her bid for Governor she was running against the Republican Party.  Frank Murkowski was their chosen person, yet Sara went against him and won in the primary.  Sara also got the head of the Republican party in Alaska, Randy Rudarick, in some serious hot water when she reported him for corrupt practices.  Yet the party swept it under the carpet.  Sara still got elected.

Mean while back here in Alaskla, More ethics complaints were turned in yesterday.  This time about the per diem she draws when not in Juneau.

It's frivilous, and the woman who is turning them in knows it.  The woman is a well known activist, a person that fights government on many issues.  She has found a loophole she can exploit and she it using it to the maximum benifit to hurt Sara Palin.  Sara is not doing anything the other Governors have not done.  Anytime she is not in Juneau she is authorized to draw per diem.  This woman wants her to sit in Juneau, and not travel around the state.  She also does not want her working out of Anchorage, she says it is wrong.  Yet every Alaskan Governor has worked in Anchorage, that is where things are happening.  Anchorage is the hub of Alaska.  Juneau is a little out of the way fishing village that just happens to be the official state capital.  Yet nothing happens there other than the legislature meeting there.  And in recent years they have been known to meet in Anchorage.

We are trying to get the State Capitol moved to Anchorage, but Juneau has put up a stiff resistance.

I think Sarah has a lot going for her, but she definitely has some hurdles ahead of her too.

She ran for vice as a "maverick" if I recall.  She was proud to have stood up to and make enemies within her own party.  Now... she has just about burned all her political bridges.  The old school republicans don't like her any more than the democrats.

I really hope she writes a well thought out book about common sense politics and starts showing up on TV.  Her message still needs to get out, now more than ever.  Even with that I don't think anyone has a prayer against Obama on the next election and I think he's almost guaranteed a second term because he can and has been blaming everything on Bush.  He likes to say that he inherited all these problems, but hopefully people are waking up and seeing that we just can't keep printing money.

Even though I think Obama has the second term locked up, I still hope I am wrong.

i am not a rush fan, but he is right on the mark when he says that if you listen to the dems, they will tell you everything you ever wanted to know.   the reason they HATE palin is they know she can beat them.  they are terrified of her.   and the same of the republicants.  they are equally scared of her, she can not be bought or shut up.  and, she can beat them, too.   the more everyone slams on her, the more i support her.

I suspect that a majority of the Rep. party officials don't want her to run. As far as I'm concerned, she made them look like fools. And they don't want her around. So her best bet probably would be a 3rd. party. And with the country and economy going into the tank, a 3rd. party will stand a better chance than before. Most people in the last election voted against Bush, which means votes for O. But within a year, alot of people will see how things are turning out, still hate the Rep., hate the office holders in now, and turn to a 3rd. party.
I belive the main thing she should do, is distance herself from the Republicans now!! She should come out and just say how disappointed she is, and claim they were just not conservative enough, to much in the pocket of big business.  gypsyman

During a recent fund raiser a month before she was to announce her resignation, she was uninvited.  First they invited her, then they uninvited her when they decided to have Newt Gingrich speak.  When she was invited to sit a a table with a high ranking Republican Senator, they made it clear she was not to speak.  They did not want her to upstage Newt.

The ethics complaints are still rolling in.  Each one cost her about $20,000.00.  They are being used as a political weapon.

Tomorrow Sara is going to be the guest on the Michael Dukes Show here in Fairbanks, from 4 to 6 PM.  The main subject will be gun issues for the state of Alaska.  Ted Nugent will also call in during the show, he wants to talk to her.  The AP is running the story on the national wire.  It may even be taped and rebroadcast.  Sara will also be taking calls from the general public as usual.  Today Michael took questions to ask her from listeners that may not be able to call in or get through.  I definately will be listening.  The radio station is KFAR 660 AM.  It will be simolcast over the internet, so anyone wanting to listen can tune in on the computer.  Remember we are 4 hours behind the east coast.
