7.62x39 barrel question
« on: May 30, 2009, 01:05:27 PM »
I know that they don't make the barrel any more but I have a few questions about them. I was thinking of starting to look for one. The question I have is, is the acurracy of the barrels good with surplus ammo? I don't really want something I have to reload for. I have some surplus and a few rounds of Remington ammo but no gun to shoot them out of so I figgured I might look into one of these. I think I am just using the ammo I have to feed a new found addiction. ;)

Without modification, they won't shoot milsurp due to the hard, recessed primers, that's why they discontinued it, everyone wanted to shoot cheap milsurp ammo in them and complained when they got misfires. They shoot sporting ammo just fine tho.  ;)

Good luck finding a barrel or a complete gun that is for sale. I looked for a year for a 7.62x39 Handi and couldn't find one in my price range. I ended up buying a new Rossi 7.62x39 for $179 OTD :-\     No flames guys... I wanted a Handi.
Anyhow... I shoot surplus out of my Rossi all the time and it shoots well enough to hit clay pigeons at 100 yds. with no trouble.
To be honest... I have had a few misfires with surplus... had to pull the hammer again and shoot. I think that was the problem with Handi's.
The best measured group I have shot with surplus ammo is just a hair under 2"
Generally I get groups in the 3" range with surplus.
They are good fun and cheap to shoot with surplus. ;D

Good luck ;)

The Rossi 7.62 is probably more accurate than most SKS, in the same price range, and already setup for a scope mount... Thats why I am ordering one.
Still want one in a Handi though, a stub project seems the only likely way of getting one for me.
However I want to reload for the little Russian, cheap ammo around these parts is a thing of the past.

Ya know I remember just 4/5 years ago 223 ammo at $3 a box, with regular hunting ammo in common cals for $9-12 a box. Things change quick this day and age. Not to mention the price of reloading goods.... But I am not going to rant.
I once had a 7.62x39 Handi, but it had a horrible chamber with the head space issues many had.
I want another, but this time I will have it right.
