shot capsules
« on: May 27, 2009, 02:55:30 AM »
Any of you ever use the speer shot capsules in the 45 LC? Iwould like to try as snake medicine. Have shot 22 and 38 ones and are marginal at best. Would # 9 shot work ok in the 45 are should I go smaller like #12?

I've dispatched rattlers with 7 1/2 shot.  My problem with the capsules is I could never get the right tension on the darn things.  Either too tight where I cracked the plastic or too loose where it backed out.  Worked around it by having first shot as a snake charmer with extras in my pocket if needed.

I have used them in a 44 mag with #9 shot. I do not recall having any problems with them backing out. I just gave them a good crimp over a light charge of Unique. I do not care which variety you use (357, 44, 45) they will develop a hole in the middle of the pattern fairly quickly out the end of the barrel. the faster the twist of the rifling the quicker it puts a hole in. They should work just fine for a few feet on snakes.

A few years back I was having trouble with some thing getting into my garbage. They (it) would tear open the bags and scatter it all over the place. Pick up was on Wed so I would put it out before I went to work and when I returned I had a mess. Believe it or not the pick up guys would not go through the yard and pick it up for me. ;) This went on for about 5 weeks. I am getting a little trimmed by now about it. The following Saturday, I loaded up 5 shot capsules in my old Virgina Dragoon, put the trash out, and sat down to have a cup o' Joe. It wasn't too long and three dogs started to sniff around the trash bags. I went to the front door and stepped through and I shot three times in their direction from about 30 yards. There was a whole lot of yipping and dogs going every where. I brought the sacks back in the garage for the next Wed pick up. Next Wed set out the trash as always and when I came home, no mess or fuss. The dogs did not seem any worse off then they were before and they never bothered the trash again.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

I use them in 45 colt, 44 mag, 44-40 and have great results.
I use # 8 shot in all.
Use Unique and keep them at the starting load, seems to help with the pattern a little.
They will kill rats out to about 25' in any of these calibers.
Have shot hundreds of these loads.
Before they were offered in 45 I used a 45 gas check turned up side down with a crimp (NOT FOR INSIDE USE)!
Then I switched to a hard plastic insert both over the powder and over the shot.
I still use this a lot as you can get a lot more shot in a case.

Long Tom what dies are you using for the 45 LC ? I have RCBS and Lee Factory Crimp dies. I could use a little guide if you can spare the time.
Thanks Zacharoo

On the 38's I just did the hardest thing was the crimp.
I did crack a couple working up my crimp, then backed off.
I just used my standard RCBS dies for seating
then used a Lee factory crimp die to crimp.

Thanks I will try the same thing with my45LC. Won't crimp with the seating dies but with the Lee FCD.
Thanks Zacharoo!!!

Sorry Zack, I just got back down here.
I just use the Lee carbide set and lightly crimp.
Takes a time or two to get the crimp tight enough to hold without breaking the capsule.
Other than that I do nothing different than if I was loading regular bullets.

thanks Tom. Will try again but out of the shot capsules. can't find any local. Will get on internet later.  Going fishing today will carry the 357 found some capsules for it yesterday and made a few last night. Got a box of 50. Still looking for 45 though!!   Filled with #8 shot out of some old shot shells laying around shop.

Thanks for info. Used FCD from Lee for 38 and only lost one. Am using the lightest crimp . Should work well. Hope to see a snake to try.
