500 handi problem

hi guys, i took my new 500 handi to the range today, and put 20 rounds of 350 xtp at pistol velocity of 1975 fps  8.375 inch bbl throught it. i have a bushnell sportsman slug gun scope on it. mounts and everything tight. could not hit a 9 inch target at 100 yds. shooting from a store bought rifle rest i'm to the right, high, low left all around this thing. can't put two holes together. had the scope on a 375h&h before [and it kicks like a mule] and it patterned fine. i have read on other threads here that the latch has to be oil free. can some one tell me why? can anyone shed any light on this. this is my first handi, but i have been shooting for 50 years. can anyone shed any light on this? thanks

I would imagine the oil lets there be some play in the alignment of things making the gun not lock up the same way each time.   I'm not sure if that is the problem on handis but that is how it works on other machinery that I work with.  One drop of oil in the wrong place can triple the standard deviation on our equipment.  That might sound a little techy to some people so to put it basically...it screws things up!

Oil on the latch/shelf is THE number one cause of inaccuracy reported by H&R gunsmiths and is an easy fix, the action is designed to rely on friction for proper lock up, any oil/solvent defeats that friction and the gun won't be accurate. Read the Handi Basics 101 as well as spend some time reading the FAQs and Help sticky, they're there for you, mandatory reading for Handi newbies.  ;)

I get 1½-2" 3-shot 100yd groups with max loads of Lil'gun and the 350gr XTP in my scoped 500, I think you'll find a good crimp will help improve your accuracy, there's a recent thread on the 500 Handi in the Handloading forum that you should read, many here to, just use the search selecting just this forum from the list.

I had a 500 S&W mag  built in 97. Tried most things in this post, no luck. I had suspected the crown and more specifically the rifeling. Looked like a gualded reamer had falttened the exit end of 2 lans. Visible but ? Sling them everywhere. Returned it to H&R within the 2 year warrenty and I am "PAITENTLY" waiting on the replacement barrel and working on a 20 year old Hornet in the mean time. I am hopeing the FAQ's will bring it to life. Good luck with yours. eddie

I also have a 500 that is new to me .I have a ? about the frame stretch that has been reported or was it just the underlug that got flattened some making them shoot loose? Also was or is it hotter loads that will do this? Should you expect no problem with loosness with light loads?. I sure am glad it came with brass and bullets as I priced a box at a local store the other day and it was $69 for 20 that sound right ? Kurt

Underlugs have been known to set back, H&R replaces the barrels when they do that, it's not limited to the 500 tho, it's happened on other high pressure chamberings. I seriously don't think the frames stretch, but the action does have flex internally, likely at the latch pin since it's not supported close to the latch, just on the ends.

Compared to my 45 with those thumper bullets would a light or middle road load be similar in the 500? Kurt

well i read through all the faq's and the must read for the new handi owners. i decided to run some fine grit[280] lapping compound through the bore. i first cleaned it with copper remover, it didn't phase it. i started looking at the bore on the crown end and could see what looks like drill marks down the bore as far as i could see. these are concentric marks that i can even feel with my pinky fingernail. tried the lapping compound, didn't phase it. these circles in the bore look like they are about   .002 deep and about  .010 apart. what do you guys think, time to send it back to the manufacturer?  searlock

Sounds to me like a bad bore, give em a call and make arrangements to have it repaired(barrel replaced), ask them to provide a call tag for UPS to pick it up on their dime.....and get a free trigger job while it's there!  ;) toll free (866)776-9292

thanks for the info. i know i got some form to fill out and send with it, i have seen threads where people say they take a long time at the repair facility. i hope not but it is what it is. thanks again quicktoo and every one else who has replied. searlock

A recent repair took 13 days, that would be for an in stock barrel, if the barrel isn't in stock, who knows how long it will take.  :-\
