Turkish Mauser 8mm.
« on: October 19, 2003, 05:35:27 PM »
I recently got an 8mm Turkish Mauser. Question? What holds the sling swivel/handguard band on? I removed what looks like an 1in.&1/4 pin ora blued nail. It has a screw slot on one end but no thread on the other. It was bent and battered on both ends like it was hammered in........Also the the barrel and receiver look new. Matching numbers 100% blue and an excellent bore. the rest of the parts are mismatched numbers.........Itshot a 1 1/4" group at 50 yards (made in 1944) Ammo 1940 Turk surplus. And my 70 year old eyes to boot! Any comments would be appreciated.   ......Horsefeathers..

on my turk the "screw" you menion was the same way peened over like it was a rivet, what I did after removing it was to replace it with the next bigger size screw10/32 if I remember correctly, tapping the opposite side of the band to match the new screw, but be careful the hole is oversized where it was countersunk and you won't have much thread depth to work with, in other words don't crank it down tight or it will strip your new threads.I also dressed the head of the screw by chucking in my drill and working it with a file to give it a short square shoulder while still being countersunk

I had to do the same thing too mine was also peened over on the end.  Luckly I had a screw that was the right size larger and i just retapped the threads put the screw in measured it and took it out and cut it off, blued it and installed it.  This was the only thing wrong with my turk mauser.
