Dog Day
« on: June 01, 2009, 07:53:55 AM »
Got out Saturday with my son and two of my buddies for a p-dog shoot. Started at 10am and didn't stop until after 5pm. The .17HMR sportster recorded the most kills but the .243 handi did well and also.223UV out to 400+ yards. I made 4 out of the hole kills at 300 with the .17. My son had numerous hits out to 200 with all three rifles. I had more fun watching him than shooting.(almost)
My buddies were more than surprised at the overall "handi" performance. They were both shooting 22-250 turnbolts of custom design and couldn't do any better or worse than we did. We ended up with just under 100 dogs, which pleased the rancher who was kind enough to allow us to "help him out" with his p-dog problem.
Live targets are as much fun as paper punchin!

Or maybe i can talk some of our Okie handiholics into a mini P-dog hunt sometime after mid july ( babies coming late june early july) *hint *hint *wink *wink

It sounds like you guys had alot of fun. That is great that your son goes with you as well. I haven't got to shoot p-dogs in a long time because of being in the Army. That will all change this summer tho. I have my eye on a sweet little .223 handi. I think I need one to go with my .44 mag and the .45-70 I am ordering this week.

Would love to give P-Dogs a try sometime before I leave this world.
My hunting buddy keeps saying that we should just take off and go do it.
Maybe one day.

P-dog shooting is worth the time if you can find it. We're lucky that the places we like to shoot them here in Nebraska haven't been turned into commercial operations like so many have been in other states. We even get to shoot them occasionally in the dead of winter if the sun is shining.

ty,
Good luck with that 1k kill. Hope you can pull it off. Even if you don't pull it off it will be a hoot trying to do it.
