New Unique formulation?
« on: June 02, 2009, 05:50:39 AM »
Unique is dirty, it has been commented on many times and has been my experience. I have been shooting it for years for just about all my cast bullet loads in 357 and 44 mag and had a stash that I am still not out of yet. My understanding was that Unique has a new formulation that is not as dirty. I just can not bring myself to throw away perfectly good powder, just to try the new formula. Any comments on the new formula?

My only real comment is that "new" is a relative term.  :)

Unique has advertised its 'new' 'improved' 'cleaner-burning' nature for several years now.  I had a bit of the old and have a pound of the new.  I suppose it's a bit cleaner, but if clean is what you want, a different powder is the way to get there.

While Unique is dirty, I shoot it in revolvers and single shot guns, so being relatively dirty, is not a big deal to me. If I was shooting a semi-auto, it might give me pause. One pass of some solvent down the bore will take most of it out; at least it does not look as dirty as an untouched barrel of "clean" burning powder. I have found that W748 is kind of dirty too, but that does not stop a plethora of folks from using it. I was just curious if the "new" Unique was that much different than the old or they just made it up to get some folks to try it out.

My newest bottle is about a year old and I don't see much diffrence between it and the stuff I shot 20 years ago , I like to shoot Unique and don't mind cleaning up afterwards so its a non-issue for me .  ;D

LaOtto222, I'm in the same boat - I've still got better than a pound of the old stuff to work through before I get to see what the new stuff is like.  Sounds like it isn't much different, but we'll see.

Unique is still my powder of choice for .45acp.  I do think it's cleaner burning than the old stuff.

LaOtto,
I have read that universal is a direct replacement for unique and it burns much cleaner.  I have been using unique for many years and am happy with the results so I never looked into this.  Check it out if you want.
