Midget Deer in clear view.......
« on: March 19, 2009, 10:49:23 AM »
Hello from Georgia,

I have told this story many times and get some type of wisecrack response every time, so I figured I would post it here and see what kind of wise guys are around these parts. I swear on a stack of bibles that this is true and not exagerated in the least.

I was walking down the powerlines heading home after a unproductive morning of deer hunting. There were no deer moving and I had only heard one shot, far off, all morning. It was approaching noon, not a cloud in the sky, no fog,  and I was keeping a slow steady pace, still hunting as I came to a ravine. As I started down, I saw movement in the edge of the woods on the opposite of the powerlines, maybe 50 yards away. I immedietly stepped behind a pine tree to hide and have a rest for the rifle when I saw something that completely blew my mind. I saw a MIDGET DEER !!! It was a buck with maybe a 6 or 8 point rack, medium brown but only about 24 " high. I could not believe my eyes at first and in the shock never even shouldered my rifle. I watched it trot off, in no hurry and oblivious as to my presence. I stood there for a few minutes, watching in that direction, but never sam him again. As soon as I got back home, I told my wife, and she was the first one to laugh. I think she believes me, but still gives me a hard time, as well as all the other folks I have told. Hey, I can take it, because I know what I saw.

If people, and other mammals can experiance dwarfism, a deer could to. Maybe it was a very lost Key deer. That is the only thing I can compare it to, besides it simply being a midget deer. I swear though, every time I have been in the deer woods since, I am on the lookout for that deer, and as soon as I see him, he will receive a blasting from whatever big gun I have at the time. May not get much more than a sandwich or two, but it will be much more believable when I pull him out of my pocket to show folks. Thanks for reading, and God Bless all the freak animals in the world.

Dave.

This past season on "The Bucks of Tecomate" on the outdoor channel they had video of a dwarf whitetail that was taken in south Texas.  The body was approx normal size but it's legs were only about half the normal length (like he was cut off at the knees).  I myself have shot a "pie-bald" buck and I have read that  sometimes their bodies are not proportioned right....I had a 1/2 body mount done on him and it sure was hard to find a form that didn't need to be modified.

All our deer are midget deer. :(

georgiadave, any places that keep exotic animals near by. could be something that excaped.

One morning a co-worker came to work in the grocery store where I worked. He was visabaly shaken up. When I asked him what was wrong he stated he had almost hit a elephant with his car on the way to work. I tried to comfort him, not really believing his story. Later that morning I listened to the news on our local radio channel. They were looking for a elephant in the area that had excaped from a carnival.

I had spent a lot of time in those woods and never seen even a elephant track, But I guess my co-worker was right. ;D

Howdy PastorP,

No exotics anywhere close to me. This deer was just like a regular deer .......just really small. The proportions were normal, color the same, rack shape the same, just a itty bitty deer. I have asked the other guys I know who hunt around here and have yet to hear of anything similiar. One wise guy asked "you sure it wasn't a goat with some limbs stuck to his head?. NO, it was not a goat. I am telling you, if I EVER see it again while deer hunting, I WILL be posting some pictures. Right before I make my sandwich. Thanks and God Bless You All.

Dave

I saw a Key deer in full rack once on the way to Key West....cutest thing I ever saw, he was about the size of a large German shepherd..but I doubt key deer get up that far..

GeorgiaDave, I believe your story. If you do a google search for "midget deer" you'll find a few other hunter reports similar to yours. On the Primos forum, a fellow by the name of, campkingmd, actually harvested one. His wasn't as small as the one you described, but it appears to fit into the category of a midget. Here is what he said about it:

I have heard of Pigmy deer and midget deer but never seen or shot one. But now I have. The deers body was 48" from head to tail, actually he never grew a tail. His legs were like pigs legs short and fat with big hoofs. Live weight he went 155LB!! I couldn't believe it when I walked up on him I was amazed...

Here is a picture of the actual deer. Note the short little legs:

And here is a link to the entire thread where I found this info:

I'll bet that upon a more thorough search, we could find many more occurrences of a Midget Deer.

Sounds like a Daisy BB gun will do the job handily without destroying meat ;D

Key Deer in Florida are that size.  Have had reports from people that live there that Key Deer are not just in the Keys.  They also are found through out Central Florida.  If they are in Central Florida there is no reason they can not cross over into Georgia.

They need to be removed from the herd!  Piebald on my avitar was 1 1/2 year old and dressed a ARO 75 pounds (in Ohio!).   3 years later I filed a doe tag w/a button buck with very short legs, very long hair and went about 60 punds. was normal color, but very shaggy and had whilte hooves.  Looked like a Roosevelt Elk.  Have a pic of a Piebald doe at my feeder That didn't come up to the top of my legs around the same time as the button buck.  Saw her in the fall 2 seasons but no shots.  Both seasons, her fawns were taller than her.  Second year she looked like a beer keg with legs and had 3 fawns.  Had pics about 75 yds, but they looke like 300 from the camera.  Very bad genetics and when populations get high, you get a lot more of them.  Get 'em out of there and to the taxidermist fast!!!  That's her first year fawn behind her and about 3 inches taller already.  She was pregnant with 3 in that pic.  That fall, all three were bigger than her and appered to be "normal" size/color deer.

my mom worked at a deer check/butcher shop for several years so i got to see all kinds of odd deer.

i saw a 3 legged doe, no leg from the shoulder down, just smooth fur.

i saw a large buck with a mane like a lion, started from his horns to the shoulders, and all the away round from the back of the jaw to the bottom of the chest. the mane was about 8" long.

i saw a small doe with a 6" beard on its chin.

ive seen 2 pure black deer, and 3 white(not albino).

the coolest was a female deer with a 6 point rack. it had female genitals, and udders from feeding a fawn, and a small 6 point rack.
