over max charge by 1 grain
« on: June 05, 2009, 08:39:20 PM »
i loaded 7,  7mm-08 shells this morning and the load window was 47.3-47.5  after loading 7 rounds i realized i had the scale set on 48.4  not 47.4 as a middle of the road load.will these 7 rounds be safe to shoot?its the first time i have made this mistake after years of by the book loads and dont want to risk it. thanks.

Personally, I would pull them and start over. You only have seven cartridges to deal with. Why risk getting hurt when in 20 minutes max you can have the loads the book lists?  It is just NOT worth taking a chance!

Probably won't hurt anything, But do you wanna take that risk and maybe end up in the hospital? I don't think I would. 8)

In working up 7mm/08 loads, I increase loads in 1 grain increments until I'm within a grain or two of the maximum published load at which time I increase by 0.5 grain increments.  If your load is middle of the road consertive with conservative pressure in your gun, increasing by a grain won't hurt anything.

I don't have my load manual handy so I can't give you any more specific information.

If your load is conservative you'll be OK. That being typed, is there any benifit to shooting the rounds? If you're in the market for a hotter load, cool. If you're just trying to save time getting back to your proven load, pulling the bullets is quicker than shooting, cleaning and reloading them. I keep my brass in lots of 40 and try to keep the amount of firings the same in the lot. Having 7 cases that have an extra cycle would get under my skin. Just me.

"...will these 7 rounds be safe to shoot?"

At one grain over max?  Absolutely none of us can possibly answer that.  If it is indeed "over max", no...but, if not, maybe.

yes. the book said 47.3-47.5  min and max  aa 4350 120 gr jacketed bullet.  after loading i saw scale was on 8 instead of 7  as in 47.4 and 48.4.  thanks for your help. pulling them. i have tons of new brass will turn on an extra light next time.maybe its time for digital scales?

I have made loads up for certain firearms that were over some manuals "Max/do not exceed" loads, but I worked up to this very carefully and would never recommend these loads to another reloader.   It seems to me you have no idea whether this load will be safe to shoot in your gun and therefore I highly recommend that you pull the bullets and start over.

That data seems to say that AA 4350 is NOT a good powder for the 120 grain bullet in the 7-08! There is NO safety margin there. If they say data is MAX and start 10% lower you have some wiggle room. They don't say what firearm was used to develope this data do they? I would expect as many as 6 grains from start to max loads.

Pull and start over.  The 7-08 isn't exactly a barn burner and any gain in effectiveness, if you actually get an marginal increase in velocity, is so minimal it couldn't be quantified anyway.  Stay within pressures listed. The other issue relates to accuracy.  I suspect the extra grain, although not much in itself, would throw off your harmonics and also result in erratic bullet behavior.  If by chance it actually increased the accuracy, all the time you owned the rifle you'd be tempted to exceed the pressure listed.

Frist thing I'd do is recheck that load, second, I'd get another book, .2 grain window just doesn't sound right unless your compressing charges and I don't think this one is.

From the online AA load data:
Quote
4350 139 HDY SST 42.8 2,467 47.5 2,803 58,764 2.800

I understand that it is a heavier bullet but it is a 20 grain heavier bullet with the same max load and it has a lot bigger "window".  I suspect your manual. You may or may not be over max.  With only 7, I'd pull'em and get a second, third or fourth manual before I went any further.

The only reference to 4350 in the Lee Second ed.  is for Hodgedon and it is 48.0 to 50.0.
