Planting an Oak tree??
« on: October 14, 2008, 01:23:11 PM »
Ive got a couple big white Oak trees on the edge of my property. Underneath them are some new oak trees .  some are 3-4 ft tall others are just a foot or so tall. I would like to replant some of these in a different area . Whats the best way to go about it & when would be the best time to do it.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

Wait until a few weeks after all the leaves are off the big oaktre. The trees will be less likely to suffer shock. It will also give the tree all winter to focus it's growth on the roots to get established. dig about 4" past the drip line and deep enough not to cut the long tap root in the center.
 Good Luck

The smaller ones will be the easiest to successfully transplant and yes do wait until they are dormant and leaves are gone to move them. I have a couple that came up in a daylily bed this year I'll be moving once they go dormant and I have a couple more I moved to pots last year that I'll be planting soon.

The very best time to do it in my opinion is in spring when they first pop up and are about 3" or 4" tall. It doesn't take much at that time to get all their root system and enough dirt with it to keep them from being bare rooted. I like to transfer them into pots for a year then transplant them to the ground.
