Why didn't I think of this before?

Was prepping case for my 41 mag today and noticed some split at the neck. Was about to hesitantly toss them in the garbage when I suddenly thought "why couldn't I trim these down and make some .41 specials"? I'm sure somebody must have thought of trimming down cases before me. Now all I need to know is case length and  loads. Common, somebody give it up.

Or you could just keep loading the split cases, but use them with low pressure plinking or target loads. Like 800fps. If it splits more, then just throw it away.  This message brought to you by the "shoot 45ACP cases until failure society".  Trap shooters do the same thing with shotshell hulls.

Actually I ended up loading quite a few "just one more time". It just kills me to throw out a case that still may have some life in it. Youd swear they were made of gold. I did find some info on the .41 special and will have at it as soon as I collect a few more shorties. One advantage is that they sure eject nice.

Trim them to 1.15 and load them with 6grs Unique, or 6.5grs Universal and 210 to 215 gr SWC. These loads are from Rocky Rabb, and I really like them in my 3in 686 Clements .41SPL.

Split necks are supposed to destroy accuracy so I have always been ruthless in culling them. But then my 38 sp cases are all almost free.

I trim my .357 mag cases down to .38 special length and use them for cheap to shoot +p 110gr bullet loads that I have developed that shoot to the same point of impact of my 180 gr bullet loads . When any cases are beyond safe reuse I melt in enough lead so they weigh 125 gr and use them as blunt arrow heads

When mouth splits occur, body splits aren't far behind. 

You will likely tire of trimming back and having more splits occur soon after.

I shoot my .38s till they crack below the bullet then sell em for scrap after I collect a bucketfull. I have also trimmed .357s and shoot them at .38+p until they crack.... Then In the bucket with the ones I cull,crush, and magle some other way reloading and all the .22 brass.
