CCI No. 34 LR primers?
« on: June 14, 2009, 07:22:41 PM »
Greetings. I purchaced 200 CCI #34 primers today, as they were all that was available and the counter guy told me they are basically LR primers that were designed to prevent slam fires.  The range master at my local range told me the same thing today.  however, I get on CCI's website, and they are saying that I should use load data for a magnum LR primer when using the 34's.

So whats the deal? Load as a standard LR primer, or load as if they are indeed magnum primers?

I've been using this primer in a Garand with excellent results for several months now.  I was also advised that this primer contained a "hotter" primer mixture for more positive ignition than their standard primer and it had a "harder" cup to resist "slam fires" when used in semi-auto military rifle actions.
I have not recorded higher velocities with the No. 34 than the standard primers I usually use, nor have I used them for any "max" loads in otther calibers other than '06. Considering that Winchester used to make their LR primers that stated they were for "Standard or Magnums" loads, I would not be concerned about the hotter "spark" until nearing maximum load levels. Also considering that many manufacturers of "ball" powder recommend magnum primers for more positive ignition, the No. 34's may be just the "ticket" for these loads regardless of action type. Regards, Jager

I have been using them for the last 10 years.  They are a magnum pellet in a harder cup.  I do not change my load data when using these in 308 and 30-06 family of cartidges.  I have used them in the WSM's, but not the standard mags or the H&H length mags.  I'm guessing that they would be OK in the mags if you are using a faster powder  ie: 4198 in the 458 Win mag...

I use them exclusively in my 308 Win or 7.62x51 for my M1A and also for 6.8 SPC for an AR15. Great accuracy results and i never use maximum powder charges.

I plan on using these in my .270 Ackley.  Would prefer a remington or CCI standard primer, but hey, one can't be picky with their primers these days.  I have noticed they seem somewhat more difficult to seat.

Any other comments on these primers, as far as performance is concerned? Do they seem to be fairly consistent?

Thanks,

I have been using them for the last 10 years.  They are a magnum pellet in a harder cup .....

Indeed!  Everyone thus far has said something accurate about the CCI #34's.

In a nutshell the CCI #34's are military-spec magnum large rifle primers!

And the CCI #41's are military-spec magnum small rifle primers for use in the AR15 family of weapons or the M1 Carbine family of weapons, etc.

Basically the #34 primer is equal in "brissance" and hot-ness as the CCI #250, but it indeed has a harder battery cup than the CCI 250 - which helps it prevent slam-fires.

The #41 CCI primer is equal in brissance and hotness to the CCI 450 with a harder battery cup than the 450!

If one needed to reload military-style ammo for a scenario like "TSHTF" or "TEOTWAWKI" for use in any kind of military [clone] rifle like a Garand, FAL, M1A, CETME, HK91 or 93, AR or M4, M1 Carbine, Thompson, BAR, etc., etc., etc.....

..... in a large rifle primer the CCI 34 would be great first choice, and the CCI 41 would be great first choice in a small rifle cap - especially if using a ball powder, which is what the military normally prefers anyway!

CCI's by the way are my favorite primers.

I've used the CCI#34 primer in both my SKS rifles for about five years due to there tenancy to slam fire or double when using soft primers.  I loaded up to 3/10 off max load and have seen no pressure sign to date. If your having trouble seating to proper depth you might consider using a Sinclair primer pocket uniformer.
