fleas?

here's a little bit different question... Every year we go to South Texas hog hunting in Feb. or March. We always have a blast and sometimes kill a few pigs. The problem is that we usually come back terribly flea bitten. how do you guys handle or avoid the little b uggers? thanks!

In Florida were I live and Hog hunt we usually run into TICKS, and man, them hogs sometimes got them something awful!  It aint long before theyre hitching a ride on you...  DEET is what I use, and a thorough checking over when you get back indoors.  Thermacells work great too for mosquitos and noseeums but not too sure if they work on fleas.  Im sure the DEET will deter them though...

DEET to attempt to repel them and permethrin to kill them if they get on my clothes. We have a doctor (surgeon) that has come out for a hunt each year for a few years. He slides a large garbage bag over a hanging hog and then sprays them with an insecticide (Raid I think) and lets it set for a few minutes. I asked him if he was concerned about the hog absorbing the insecticide and he says he is more worried about what the ticks and fleas are carrying.

It KILLS fleas and a whole host of other obnoxious biting and flying insects. 

You just WON'T be bothered anymore with PERMETHRIN.

  To be honest I've never seen that many fleas on hogs,javelina yes. I've heard but never tried spraying them down with common rubbing alcohol and letting them hang awhile if possible. But this is just what I have heard.  Kix

I've killed two hogs in the last week or so...okay my buddy killed one of them   

we didn't see/experience any fleas, however we did not mess around I can tell you that.  Its hot in southeast texas during the summer, even at night and we got after it.

that being said, I think no matter what if there were a bunch of fleas they would cling to the hide no matter what. i think you wouldn't be able to get them off of the hide if you wanted too, so you probably would not have much to worry about it.

The worst thing that happened to me was a big tick was chomping down on my stomach and that was even before the sun went down and the pigs had not come in yet.

Fleas?  Are you sure it is not a case of good ole Texas chiggers?  Speaking from experience, I had a nature call, went behind some brush, dropped my pants and took care of the job.  Back at the camp that night I started itching pretty bad, after digging for a while I finally inspected myself and found I was covered with the little devils, bites in places I don't want to talk about.  Its ten PM, but I am off to the local Wal-Mart looking for relief, the pharmacist recommended a product that provide some help and directed me to sporting goods for a insect repentant that contained DEET.  It took about two weeks for the sores to heal up and itching to go away, that’s even with at least one daily soak in a tub of hot Epsom salts water.
