scope a versa pack

What scope mount are you using on the versapacks? I have the Weaver, NEF Ultra, and the NEF Standard. None will fit without modifying the mount or the rear sight on the rifle???

I don't have a Versa Pack barrel, but the Leupold #56515 rail is only 4.35" long with three slots, it may work for ya. There's an actual pic in the FAQs with all the other bases. The pic at most sources is not the right base, it doesn't have all those holes in the front end.

I had to remove the rear dovetail sight from my VP when I put the NEF mount on it. Screwing the mount down tight was easy despite the plastic ramp that smoothes the gap from chamber to barrel diameter.

Thanks!

Quick, that looks like it will work. I had been looking at the EGW, didnt want to pay the price!

Whatever happened to the old style mounts?

Ironglow, That's what I had to do, just wasn't happy with it.

Confession time.

I kinda cheated. I modified a mysterious scope base that I've had floating around in my miscellaneous box for a few years. I drilled an appropriate hole so that I had two holes that lined up with the holes in the barrel. I filed and fiddled with the back end, making an overhang, and used aluminum black on it (see pic - and notice it is not perfectly flat - I'll get around to that later, just wanted to mount the scope and go shoot!). I installed it on my favorite SB2 frame with the laminated straight stock and took it to the range. It shoots like a dream!

Cheers
Kerry

First two pics show the "overhang" - I did it that way 'cause it seemed less hassle than cutting it off flush with the back of the barrel, then making a new groove in the base for the rings. Next is the front end showing the rear sight, and last the VP barrel on the frame with the cinn lam stocks.

Works just dandy for me. ;D The scope has a focusing ring on the eyepiece so I can re-focus for changing ranges... and as an aside, I'm a stock crawler and like to get up nice and close to the scope!

Works fine on a rimfire, but I wouldn't rig it this way on anything with recoil... :o

FWIW, I ordered two of those bases Saturday and they arrived today. I attempted to mount one on my versa pac .22 LR and it would not fit behind the rear sight leaf. It is only about 1/4" too long on the front, so I cut it off about .075" short of the blade and pushed the elevator all the way forward. The cut still leaves about 1/4" of base in front of the forward slot and it looks like it grew there now. I also had to cut another slot in the base for the integral mount that is made onto my little cheap red dot shght, but at around $5 each, I can afford to experiment a little. I used some Birchwood Casey Ultra Black and it looks like it was made exactly to fit the little rifle. I bought the rifle for my 6 year old daughter, but I am smitten with it and will probably shoot it more than she does.

Here's another base that appears to be shorter than others, it's listed as 3¾" long.

How many different scope rail mount hole patterns are there in the NEF/ H&R stable? Are certain rails made for certain types/ models of their guns? The Versa-pack hole pattern on the .22 looks flimsy with 3 holes , and in a short single line. Could additional support be gotten from the rear sight dovetail mount slot? Can the plastic fairing be removed? What is the finish beneath the plastic fairing? Could it be left off? And finally, is there a metal source of support beneath the fairing that could be used to attach a rail?  I know this is a large number of questions but I suspect they have already occured to a lot of you and some were acted on. No sense in being too proud to ask. Thank you for any wisdom you can pass on,      Ken

They're all the same three-hole pattern on the single shots, even older pre-'87 H&Rs.

Here's a pic of the short base compared to a standard base.  ;)

Would it be possible to remove the VP .22 rear sight and use its dovetail opening as a fwd. support for any current rails?  I was wondering if a dovetail base could be secured in its place to use as a forward anchor point for a rail that could reach the NEF mount holes.    Ken
