Need help 45-70 H&R
« on: June 16, 2009, 03:47:48 PM »
I just lucked into a H&R Handi in 45-70 caliber. It appears to be a factory virgin when I saw it last week and I thought it was already gone so I did not check barrel length or serial number.  I want to reload and have access to primers tomorrow.  I also have some 2400 powder excess from my .357 loading.  First question will this powder work?  Second what primer do I use small or large rifle.  Third question, I am going to need brass, Lee (?) dies and maybe a mold, I have a few things to trade, none of them shooting stuff including a handheld shortwave transciever.  How do I list this and where do I do it without upsetting the forum moderator.  Like I said before. Primers I have to get tomorrow, the rifle is going to take at least a month before my daughter can bring it.  Oh yeah I like a ghost ring or peep sight and I understand H&R sells one but have no idea where to look on thier website, I guess that's number question four.  Any help would be appreciated.

This was at an estate sale and my wife bought the 45-70 without telling me, even though she knew I had already cornered a 223 and a 30-30 set of handis in like condition as we walked in.  I guess I'm bragging on her she puts up with a lot and is also one great cook.

Post a want to buy/trade ad in the Reloading Equipment and Supplies classified forum for components and dies, etc.

Be aware that any H&R 45-70 made before 1987 is only rated for trapdoor loads, since you haven't seen it yet, thought I'd mention that as the old Shikari is on a cast iron frame.

Alliant used to list 2400 for the 45-70, but no longer does, their info in the modern rifle level 45-70 Loadbook shows 28gr start and 30gr MAX for 300gr bullets, and 27gr start, 29gr MAX for 350gr bullets, doesn't specifiy cast or jacketed.

In their trapdoor data, they list 30gr MAX 2400 for the 300gr Hornady HP, and 25gr MAX for a 385gr cast and 400gr Speer FN.

I've shot the 350gr Hornady RN on top of 28gr 2400 in one of my Handis, it's very accurate.  ;)

I'd search for 2400.  I remember seeing some posts just the other day.

Primers are large rifle primers.

You got a winner there as far as the 45-70 goes.

Some other loading stuff you might find fun as relates to the rifle you just bought

I've shot 405gr cast with 25-26gr 2400 a LOT.  It runs about 1450-1500fps, doesn't lead, and doesn't beat you up.

Oh yea, you'll need large rifle primers.  I like Federal when I can find them, or Winchester.  CCI is my last choice.  I also shoot this in my BFR and it has trouble setting off CCI.

All three rifles appear to be new and are on SB2 frames with matching barrels.
All three purchased for under $600 which makes me happy.
Yeah the best part is my wife and our two straight, clean kids.  They took off after high school and have never thought about coming back.  Never thought I would be blessed like I am now back in the raw red days in the army.
