Buffalo Bore 45-70 ammo in a Handi?
« on: June 16, 2009, 03:08:41 PM »
I picked up a box of Buffalo Bore 45-70 400gr ammo today.  The price was right and I figure that being a 'magnum' round the brass should be good stuff to load later.

The box warns that it should only be used in "Browning 1885 & 1886, Marlin 1895 manufactured  since 1972, Ruger #1 & #3, new Winchester 1886, and Shiloh Sharps Rifles."

The Handi is notably absent from that list.

  I have a 45-70 SB2 with a NH serial # ( that's 1993 production)

The literature calls this load 400grains at 1800 fps.  I know some of you guys are loading some hot stuff for your Handis.  Is this load too hot for mine?  Should I shoot it, or save it for another as yet unpurchased gun?

  Thanks for any help.

Buffalo Bore doesn't list any 400gr ammo, but everything they do list shows the Handi as safe, must be old stock, give em a call. If it's loaded too long for your chamber, you won't be able to shoot it anyway, have you tried to chamber a round yet?

No, I haven't tried chambering a round yet.

It makes sense that it may be old stock.  I mentioned it being 'priced right'.  My thought when I saw it priced a few dollars less than the Rem green box 'regular' 45-70 government loads was that it was still wearing a price tag from a year or more ago when the store's cost was lower.

There is a phone number on the box, perhaps I should just pick up the phone and ask them about it.

You can call or email.
I think the owner is Tim Sundles, and he is top notch about answering questions quickly.

I've shot the 405 gr Buffalo Bore in my Buffalo Classic.  The gun did fine, but my shoulder told me to back off.
That stuff packs a punch!!  ;D
