Kimber vs. CZ Dan Wesson 10mm?
« on: June 10, 2009, 07:39:06 AM »
I'm in the market and have the option of the Kimber Stainless Target II  or the CZ Dan Wesson PTM7 both are within about $40.00 of each other on price. Any experiences to rate one over the other?

Thanks

Had a Kimber Stainless Target I in .45acp. Foolishly traded it off. Wish I had it back. I'm sure the 10mm version would be of the same quality. I have know a couple of guys that owned the Point Man 7s. They seemed to be a good solid pistol as well. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either one if I wanted a single stack 1911 in 10mm. The only real difference is the Series II Kimbers have the Swartz firing pin safety. The DW is like a series 70 Colt. That alone might be enough to tip the balance to the DW in my eyes.

The Kimber has a forged frame and slide.  The DW uses cast frames and slides I believe.  If the price difference is only $40 then I would go for the Kimber just to get the forged and machined parts.

Nothing wrong with 1911's that use castings but I don't believe they have the long-term durability of 1911's that use forgings.  An old National Guard MTU armorer I know is fond of saying that a forged 1911 is good for 20,000 rounds whereas a cast gun is good for only 10,000 rounds before excessive wear becomes a safety or functioning issue.  Either is probably more rounds than I would ever put through a 1911 but I offer it as advice frome an individual who should know what he's talking about.

The Kimbers also come with throated barrels to accept hollow-point bullets.  I don't know what DW does to their barrels.

All the USPSA guys who've been putting 10-20k rounds a year thru their 1911 style pistols will be surprised to find out their pistols are no longer safe or functional.

another option for a 10mm is the tanfoglio witness. Excellent quality CZ 75 clone and pretty reasonable price as well. I have 6 witness pistols and they have all been great

Without a moments hesitation I would go with one of Keith Lawton's fine DW's over a Kimber any time.
