AA No. 7 for .357 and 9 mm
« on: June 04, 2009, 05:17:44 AM »
For economy's sake, I have been using Unique for both my usual 9 mm and .357 loads.  I have decided to change because of availability and because of its being somewhat dirty.   My intended load is 125 gr. 9mm and 158 gr. .357--both are jacketed bullets.  Have any of you used AA No. 7 for these loads and are you  satisfied with it.  I have heard it is much cleaner burning than Unique but have no experience with it.  Is there any other single powder for both loads that you think might be satisfactory?

To fire an accurate shot means to not just hit the target, but to know where the target was hit before the bullet got there.

For several years I have used AA #7 to load (both cast and jacketed) for a 9 mm, a .357 Sig, and a .40 S&W. My cast bullets are 140 grain for the 9 mm, 140 and 160 grain for the .357 Sig, and 185 grain for the .40 S&W. I like AA #7 in all of them. I see no reason why it wouldn't work well in .357 S&W Magnum also.

Never loaded any 9's but a bunch of 357's in several weights with it. I also use it for my mid weight loads in my 10mm. Shoots good, meters great, and is no more dirty than any of the other more popular ball type powders.

I believe the original intent of AA no. 7 when it came out was for high performance 9mmx19 loads. I shoot it in .45 Colt Ruger level loads and it seems to be a clean burning, powerful powder, good stuff...

Have you considered AA-5 for the reloads you're doing?

If you haven't bought your powder yet, AA-5 can both be used for what it sounds like you're doing, as well as HS-6.  I looked at both of those for something similar wo what you're doing.

Also now that Hodgdon's LongShot is available, maybe it can load all those rounds you're considering.

I wanted a propellent for 124-125grn jacketed and cast 9mm's, and .38's and .357's from 125 to 180grains.

But I do also try to choose a powder that can also be used for shotshells too.

plus the Accurate pistol powders seem availible in this time of powder shortages. I use it in my 10mm and it's great

Something you might consider is finding a copy of Ken Water's "Pet Loads" from Wolfe Publishing.

Waters no longer writes his former column for Handloader magazine,
but his articles have been gathered and compiled into what amounts to a huge reloading manual, and his narrative and data are still quite pertinent and applicable.

Waters data influenced me considerably when I was looking at a multi-powder for the 9mm, .38 Special and .357 Magnum, along with the 12 and 20 gauges.  I went with HS-6 and AA5 in that order - AA7 would be my second 'Accurate' powder choice.

Look at Waters' articles in your decision making - decide for yourself.
