I believe a low end power factor rule would make SASS a safer game and level the playing field.

Here is how I would do it.

1. Have a minimum velocity rule of 650 fps.
2. Have a minimum bullet weight of 115 grains
3. Have a power factor of 100,000 for all sass firearms except .36 C&B (velocity X bullet weight)

Far as I know pard they are going to vote on a 80,000 power factor. That will come up at the TG meeting in December and if approved, it will go on to the Wild Bunch for a final and then a rule will be drawn up. I still think it might make the 32-20 folks have to look at whether to stoke up or switch calibers.

Maybe everyone out there has more guns than I do, but I really hate to dedicate a gun to a "whimp" load. It would drive me crazy to file the sights to zero a "cowboy only" load and not be able to use the gun otherwise. I like to be able to also carry my guns in the woods with woods type loads, ie. 44 spl 250 gr at about 900, or .45 lc 255 at 850 fps. The wild bunch won't let me vote, but for my 2cents I would prefer that all guns were kept at reasonable factory power levels. My last box of factory .45 lc cowboy clocks at 685 fps but that seems enough. Seems more fitting to the spirit of fun and comaradary to shoot "authentic" power loads. Of course the "competition" guys want any edge they can get and I do have to admit that I enjoy shooting 700-750 fps loads also. 44 Man

I'm sorry to get on a rant like this but every time I see "Level the playing field" I can help think what a joke..

Some people are just better than others. throught pratice or dedacation or natural ability.... The level playin field concept is a joke

As to safety if your targets are in good repair and hung right slow or fast wont matter a bit...

Leave the rules alone.. If you have to win to have fun in this game then you've lost already

Howdy Montana,
I don't get into level playing fields either and I am a fun shooter and not really very competitive. That said, I have to mention that I do believe a frontier cartridge shooter started this latest hoopla. I remember hearing that some folks got down right indignant about his smokeeeless looking BP cartridges and his filler. I think I would have to agree, as I have shot the BP classes pretty steady for a few years and have observed the phenomina of a BP shooters loads looking less smoky than those in the smokeless classes. Too, bad, but I have heard from my TG that this looks like it just might go through this year. I am interested in the testing that will be done on the club level and I have also heard that the simplist test will be to simply shoot through a 1 inch thick piece of plywood to conform. Other tests might be done a large matches, like pulling bullets and weighing, but the suggestion on the plywood seems likely. My problem is I shoot pure lead in my C&Bs and I want to see how I fare at 15 yards with a 30gr load and if my pure lead will actually go on through. I might have to do some loading up myself for this testing and I have never been accused of anything except putting out a bunch of smoke. We will see. If you have input, talk with your TG and tell him how you feel.
