What to buy???
« on: June 11, 2009, 03:09:44 AM »
First, I have three levers now.  A 94 in .30-30, an 1895SS and and 1895CB.  Now I'm getting the urge for a pistol caliber lever.  Nice and trim if possible.  Deer/hog capable.  Not hung up on "cowboy authentic".  Could be a clone...  Not a trapper type model.  I prefer the mid-long barrels.  What are the better clones?  How is the PUMA?  I'm not interested in a .480 or anything like that.  I guess a .44/.45/.357 would be good.  Don't really care for safeties on them.  Sort of a traditionalist there although I sort of like the look of the stainless PUMA.  Any recommendations or "stay the heck away from's"?

usually don't carry a handgun when I hunt unless I'm hunting with it...

I do have 3 .357's but that's not a big one for me...

I'm looking more for gun ideas than cartridge.

I'd buy a Marlin or a Winchester.

I have a Rossi .357 mag with a 24" octagonal barrel - it's my favourite rifle ever ! The trigger is very crisp , action cycles smooth and it shoots better than I can hold .  I did not like the factory buckhorns and replaced it with a Skinner dovetail mounted peep .

I have 4 of the Puma's, 2- 454's one stainless Trapper and one 20" blued, 44 mag 20" blue and a 357 with the 24" oct. barrel and like em all.  Also have a Marlin 1894C 357 and a 94 Win Trapper in 45 Colt.  I think the Puma's are built stronger and with a little use or some touching up are quite smooth to run.  Of all on those, I think I like the 454's the best, they also feed the 45 Colt rounds fine.  DP

I love the action cycling of Pumas... they are very smooth... however I'm deeply in love with my 1894 Marlin .44 Mag.  I'm waiting on a good chance to park a .357 Mag Marlin next to it some day.

Winchester or Marlin would be my votes.

I had or have a good number of pistol caliber leverguns.  Over the years, the '94 Marlins and '94 Winchesters developed problems with their feed cycle.  My model '92 Winchesters and Pumas just keep on working.  In carbines, I've kept at least one .44 around the house for the last 35 years, but have found the .357 to be more versatile and just as deadly at carbine ranges.  My favorite is a Puma Hartford short rifle with a 20" heavy octagon barrel; heavy enought to hold like a longer barrel yet short enough to handle like a carbine.  Using a hard cast 160gr bullet at 1400fps, its like a .38-40.  Load a jacked SP 158gr at about 1750fps and its beginning to sneak up under a .30-30.  Even with my 60 year old trifocaled eyes, iron sights are fine at these ranges.  If you like that stainless, go get it and enjoy.

Okay... so if I buy the PUMA should I look for the new Italian made ones?

I really like the way you can load the magazine tube from the front like a .22.  I don't mind the loading gate, but...

Do all the PUMA's come with the dark stained wood?  I don't really want to have to strip, sand and oil but will if I have to.

I think maybe I'll get the .357 first and then maybe a bigger one.  I have no desire to duplicate my .45-70's... just maybe a .44 or .45.

I "should" be visiting the US on leave in July.  Maybe I can buy one then.

Marlin in .357 mag. or .41 mag. If You reload the rounds are cheap to recycle and the little Marlin is light and easy packing, tough as a 2 dollar steak and in a rifle the .357 round works great on the deer and hogs here in Arkansas (how big are the deer where You are?) A bonus is that these rifles are about as fun to shoot as anything You'll find.
I also have a Marlin in .41 Mag. and I highly recommend that caliber too,the .41 is a heckava' deer cartridge out of a rifle. I load 158 gr SWC in the .357 and 215 gr. SWC lead boolits in them for cheap plinking and smaller game and Hornaday XTP's for deer.

When I made this choice I stayed away from the marlin because I heard the 44mags were hit and miss with jamming problems.  That's just what I read from people.  I like the puma, but I don't think you could go too far wrong with any of them.  The new italian rifles are much mroe expensive from what I've seen.

I would imagine the new Italian ones are well made too, they have a good reputation.
I have a a Rossi 92 (Brazil) , but it's an EMF Hartford model, it only loads from the loading gate, and no all Rossi's do not come with dark stained wood, the EMF Hartford model has better looking wood, although still hardwood, it has nice grain and mine was oil finished. It's finish overall is nicer in my opinion and the EMF importer orders this with different specifications.  Both Puma's and EMF Hartford models are from Brazil...except now Puma's are from Italy.  I don't know how this affects EMF, have not read much on that.

Check out a EMF Hartford model from Brazil if you get the chance, and see what you think.  They have carbines, and both long and short rifles, octagon barrels or round, there is a lot to choose from.  .357 would be a nice caliber, mine is in .45 but would sure like to have the short rifle in .357.
