Ruger M77 tactical

Hello, does anyone have any experience with the Ruger M77 tactical? I am interested in one in .308. It is short and nice looking but fairly high end price wise. I would like it for a brush hunting deer gun. I have read some review on them and good things are said, but then most of the time I believe that reviews are done by professionals that get paid to shoot and review. Thanks for any feedback.

If you can stand the thought of using a Remington you could go with a 700 SPS Tactical if you can find one.  There are a few new ones around still if you look hard enough.  They come in .223 and .308 with a 20" barrel and Hogue stock.  They are a bit cheaper than the Ruger, and I've yet to see one that didn't shoot pretty good.

If accuracy is a goal, I believe the Remington will make you happier.

My experience with a safe full of Rugers 2-1 over any other make) is that they shoot great.  I have often posted links to pictures of the groups I've gotten (several sub-caliber at 100 yards) so I won't do so again.

All of my Rugers have the barrels folated and the triggers polished, but I do this to every rifle I get.  I suspect they would respond favorably to bedding but I have never tried one.  The angled screw in front seems to do what it was designed to do, which was snug the action down to the wood better.

Go ahead and get the Ruger if you like it - my experience suggest you will not be disappointed.

In the August issue of Shooting Times, Layne Simpson features two Rugers & in his article he states something I have tended to agree with since 1970.  Ruger M 77 's are "well built".  He also observes that in the past they have been "inconsistent" in accuracy.  But he concludes the article buy saying since Ruger started making its own barrels "he now finds them to be consistently accurate".   GOOD SHOOTING  :) Jim
