Swiftman: Wow! This is interesting. Armadillos are pretty much a southern critter, as are Possums and to have both breeds of critters moving further northward is evolution in the making. We see Possums in upstate NY, where it gets a heck of a lot colder than where we would normally expect to see the Possum and this is pretty evolutionary. We often refer to them as the 'former', 'late' or 'seriously debilitated Attack Possum' whenever we see one on the road after their last failed attempt at car-jacking........
I do not now how destructive the Armadillo may be to ground nesting birds, if they are destructive to the nests at all when foraging. I know they move pretty slowly and doubt I will ever see them in culinary pursuit of the great American Free-Range Chicken and also do not know if they would stop at a convenient nesting site for a breakfast of fresh eggs, which means only that I don't know how destructive they would be. I doubt however that we will see the demise of one or two species of ground nesting birds in the evolutionary struggle of the Armadillo to become a colder weather resident when there are much more predatory critters in search of ground nests in the colder northern areas.
