load data for 150gr Remington pointed bullet in .357 Mag?
« on: June 21, 2009, 05:04:45 PM »
Howdy,
A buddy has a Handi-rifle chambered in .357 Mag. Has anyone tried the Remington pointed bullet made ffor the .35 Remington? How ddoes it perform? Any data available?
That bullet looks like a natural for a .357 rifle. Is it?

Thanks,
Bitterroot

It would depend on what caliber it's designed for. You'd have to be able to drive it fast enough to get it into that velocity range or expansion would be poor. Given that's it pointed it would most likely be designed for something in the .35 Whelan class. If you're going to shoot it at game I'd be sure.

It's a 35 Remington bullet, I agree with Rusty, it's a good performer in the 35 Rem at 2350fps MV, in the 357mag it would be like a FMJ!!

It might have a tendency to tumble when it hits something . Initial  stabilization could be an issue also.

Way back when I had some color in my hair I bought a bunch of 150 Remington  Spire Points on a whim. Used a bunch of them shooting steel .I have also used them for critters up to  Texas Whitetail Size with excellent results . Load was a max load of H110 and seated long to touch the rifling in my 24V Savage. This same load shoots very well in my Handi as well.As far as bullet expansion goes,The hogs are DRT as well as the Deer. Haven't recovered a bullet so I can't say for sure that they do or not.Bang Flop is good enough for me .Would buy more if I find some.

All this is likely a moot point, Remington doesn't make them available as a component any more, only in their ammo.

Thanks,
From the placement of the cannelure, I would think that there would be room for a ton of powder. Enough to maybe get 1800 fps out of a carbine barrel.
Would the Hornady 180gr SSP bullet be reasonable for the .357 Mag rifle? The last two deer I shot with that bullet had two little holes each and it shot two inches @ 100yds from my .35 Rem Contender. Good bullet!
As long as we're not loading to an overall length dictated by revolver cylinder length, why not use a bullet of equal weight, but with a B.C. above .100? Just looking for options.

Hornady doesn't list the 180gr SSP in the 357mag rifle data which runs to a max of 1450fps with 180gr bullets, but they do list it in the 357maX TC pistol which starts at the same 1450fps, FWIW.
