Mossberg 835 vs Mossberg 535

Ok so they are both Mossberg pump action shotguns that are chambered to accept 2.75,3, and 3.5 inch shells.  THey both also come in just about every configuration you can imagine.  Please help me out and let me know what the heck the difference is.  Is there one that is preferred over the other?  Thanks a lot!

You can probably confirm this at the Mossberg website but the 835 has an overbored barrel, also has ported barrels, is a tad heavier, and a bit more expensive. The 835 will probably have a bit more resale value if you ever decide to do that and could be checked in the gun blue book. Otherwise the one that is preferred is the one that feels and looks right to you and fits your budget.

In my opinion, because of the differences in weight, the 535 is a good walking gun, and the 835 is a good sitting gun.

Due to its overbored barrel, the 835 will give slightly better patterns, although 535 owners report that they get great patterns.

If you're shooting 3.5" shells at geese, you might want the extra weight of the 835.  Otherwise, I'd get the 535.

I agree that the 835 is a great sitting gun while the 535 handles nicely for walking around.    For me I find the 835 is very muzzle heavy and does not feel natural on a woods walk.    However when I am sitting in a turkey blind the 835 is perfect and that overbore barrel sure patterns those 3.5" #6 loads tight.   

Pick the one that feels best in your hands, then think about your primary usage.    Good luck.

Your comments have given me a little reasurance that I'm not totally nuts. I really like my 835 on turkey hunts but I hate carrying it. It feels clumsey & never feels "right" until I raise it to shoot. Glad to know it's not just me.

Well, I made the choice and went with an 835.  It's used but I bought it from a friend.  I think he is a big sissy, selling it b/c it was to heavy to carry.  When in the spring we only walk about 200 to 400 yards to out blinds.  He has shot it a total of 9 times. It's the camo version and still has the sticker on the stock.  Got it for $275 total.

$275????    Man you got a great deal on a hardly used 835......     get out now and pattern it and find the load it loves.    Mine patterns like it was made for the 3.5"  #6 load for turkeys.   it is a deadly fist of shot out to 50 yds.   Good luck.

Mine likes the 4 and the 5's best. I don't know if this is unusual but my pattern zero and density look identical whether I use the 3" or 3.5". The only difference is with the 3.5", me and "Tom" both take a pounding.

Mine has never liked #4 shot.  Leaves big bare spots in the pattern.    It absolutely loves the # 6 shot.     Ive never tried the #5.

I have both: a 28" 835 and a 20" 535.  The 535 is for 3 gun matches and home defense and the 835 is my turkey, dove, quail, and duck gun.  Most everyone stated the basic differences between the two, but the essential difference is the way the barrel attaches.  A 535's mag tube is closed at the end and the nut is attached to the barrel lug and screws into the threaded end of the mag tube.  a 835's mag tube is open (like a remington) and the lug slides over the tube and the nut then screws onto the tube.  Other than that, and the differences mentioned above, they are the same.

I just re-read my post and realized I completely lied.  I have a 500, not a 535.  I just double checked and the 535 is a 500 that will shoot 3.5's.  It has the same barrel attachment as the 500.
