Hunters in arkansaw finally get to use a varmint rifle for crow hunting. Prior to this season, the only legal gun was a .22 rimfire or shotgun with #2 common shot or smaller. This year hunters are allowed to shoot crows with rifles up to .30 cal. during coyote season. This means from Sep. 6 thru. Feb. 28 we can crow hunt with a varmint rifle 4 days a week.

In another stroke of genius the game and fish gods decided the armadillo no longer needed full protection and was placed on the open season list. This means for the first time ever those egg sucking b******s can be shot. http://www.junglewalk.com/popup.asp?type=v&AnimalvideoID=1094

Just a reminder, don't forget about those Wildlife Management Areas. They have totally seperate regs as far as what caliber for what. I regularly hunt a WMA in NW Arkansas and unless the gun deer season is open the bigest rifle you can carry on the park is .22 rimfire. Even for coyotes! Makes hunting crows more of a challenge, may stick to the 12 gauge 3 1/2 magnum for that!

I am curious about armadillos, what type of round would it take to easily dispatch one? How thick does thier leather get on avaerage? They sure are odd, but interesting to me.

Also, I never was able to understand that a lot of states have animals listed as "varmints" or "pests", yet there is still seasons and regulations for them, I just don't understand that thinking. I always thought that when an animal was classified as a varmint or a pest, then that animal was in trouble from man year around and by any means possible! I am glad to see that there is some regulations on them though, or too many people would abuse the animals badly. I just thought it very wierd from what I have always knew in this state, that in others there are laws on such animals. I kinda wish there was some restrictions in favor of our varmints such as the coyote, cause I hunt them, but I love em!

Huntrap : It doesnt take a vary large caliber to kill armadillos a 22 will end it quick have shot many in the yard with a 22 auto pistol, but you do need to use some kind of hollow point for the quick kill as they will run like the dickens when hit usually for their underground dens, the shell or hiode is less than a quarter inch thick ar rhew thickest part no problem getting thru it with a bullet we usually use whatever we are using at the time we run into them as I dont know of anybody who actually goes on a hunt for them but about sunset you can usually find them in the fields digging up worms and grubs to eat, (will make a mess of a nice lawn it will look like a bunch of golfers were taking divots all night after a feeding frency) anyhow we just shoot them and go on our way good feed for coyotes.
