Filling screw holes
« on: July 20, 2009, 01:28:52 PM »
I have an old single shot that I got and would like to bring it back to shooting form.  The previous owner(s) drilled several holes in the barrel for sights, plus another dovetail.  The holes are not even in line.  The barrel is an octagon.
Can I put screws in the holes and weld over them, or just fill the holes with weld and dress the barrel.
Any and all suggestions welcome.

Sure you can weld up the holes and reblue. But almost always the weld will be a different color than the barrel, and it'll be pretty noticable.

I've had good luck filling the holes with screws, file the screw off so a little sticks up, peen it over to fill any gap, file and sand smooth, and blue. It's barely noticable most of the time.

I will second the filling with a screw plan.  Before you put the screw in, put a little countersink or bevel on the edge of the hole.  get a screw that will bottom out and put it in tight.  cut it off a little above the barrel and then just flatten it out with a little hammer.  File flat and blue.  Believe it or not it is really easier on a round barrel, but if you take care you can get a good finish on a flat surface.  Larry

The guys are right. It's really hard to get the blue to be even when a section of the barrel has been to welding heat.. I've a project waiting in the wings.. a T-bolt Browning with a salt wood stock. The pitting is pretty bad but not terrbile.. I will well them up and refinish.. usually it can be made to come out OK...not always.  The screws always works well and the tiny chamfer around the hole is a great tip.. I also file a tiny nick on the interior edge..so that when the screw is peened over material will flow into the nick and physically lock the screw into it's hole.. Also draw filing with a very fine cut file will do a good job at leveling the surface.

I will also agree that filling it with screws is a good method. just remember to put some kind of sealing agent on the threads, then file down ALMOST flush with the barrel or reciever, and then grind with fine grit, and polish to shine, then re-blue. and depending on the blue that was used you might have to re-blue entire part. Also a helpfull note---Remember to check and make sure whaen u screw the screws in they dont petrude int the barrel or reciever where it can come in contact with moving parts....hope this helps..
