Load data for 250 cast .44
« on: July 03, 2009, 04:43:03 AM »
I'm having to use a cast bullet for primitive hunting in Louisiana since they do not allow my .357 and my .44 barrel is an overbore (.432) meaning it groups a little better then a full chock shotgun.  They only bullets that I can find in that .432 bore are cast but thats OK.  I just need to know if H110 would be a good starting point to work up a load?  I sure hope it's an OK powder for cast since I have plenty of it.

22 grs. of H110 and the 250 cast has been used by just about everybody who has loaded for the .44 Mag.  Very accurate in all my .44s , about 1250 fps from a 7 1/2" barrel, about 1700 fps from 20" rifle.

H-110 is a very good powder for the 44 mag.  Just don't drop the charge below 3% to start with, that comes out of Hodgdon's Manual.  Also use a mag primer and a good crimp with H-110.  DP

Thanks guys.  I will dump a load of 22 grains of H110 behind that 250 and if its accurate enough I will just leave it right there.  1700 fps will be fine.

If that doesn't shoot good, try going up in charge weight.  Hodgdon's lists the 240gr Jacketed bullet at 24.0 gr of H-110, the cast is easier to push than jacketed, and in your Handi rifle you can go that high with the 250 cast.  DP

Thats probably not going to happen.  I have a lot of Standard Remington 9 1/2  large rifle primers and getting more in my part of Louisiana seems remote.  Everyone is out of primers.

if you cant find mag primers and arent shooting right to the max in pressure 2400 might be a better choise for your application

2400 might be the same problem as the primers.  Our main supply here in central Louisiana has some shotgun primers, no powder and no bullets.  I can get cast bullets online but right now I have H110 and standard large rifle primers.  I might just have to make that work or just turn it all in and become a democrate.

just make sure if your using std. primers with 110 you use loads that are near the top in the book so you build some pressure. that will go along ways toward burning the powder effeciently. DONT try to down load with stand. primers!!!

I actually found a box and a half (150) of Winchester "large magnum pistol" primers in the bottom of the box.  That should be enough to get to work up a decent load and get the sights to target.  Thanks guys.
