Deck Cannon Plans?
« on: June 27, 2009, 06:03:13 PM »
I have a few extra pieces of rifled 30mm barrell and am thinking of making a deck cannon out of one them.  I am having a hard time finding pictures of any of them, although they seem to have them all over the place at Disney World - - I just didn't take any pictures...

Does anyone have any links to good photos/plans for a deck cannon?  I don't think it will be a very complicated build, but I want to get it as close to a replica as possible.

Thank ya'll for your help.

NitroSteel,

I don't have the plans but, I believe these are your deck cannons. I took these photos last year at Disney World.  The last on was at Hollywood Studios.

I have a few extra pieces of rifled 30mm barrel and am thinking of making a deck cannon out of one them.

To my limited knowledge, no cannon of the styles shown was ever rifled.  Now if you mean a pivot gun such as the US Navy used circa the Civil War, there were rifled versions of them (I think.)  The Navy certainly had Parrotts and one could easily make a Parrott style gun from a piece of 30 mm barrel.  Below is a freelance example:

This was made from pictures, not plans, so the reinforce should be about 3/4" bigger in diameter and the trunnions about 1/4" bigger, but it still shoots.

if you want 100 or so original drawings , go to :  www.arkeliet.net
when you come there , look for the word : bildearkiv
its in the upper right corner of the screen .
left click at that word .
when that page open , scroll down until you can see the original artillery handbooks .
left click on the book of your choice
there you will find lots of original drawings
cannons , howitzers , mortars and carriages .
there is lots of naval guns and carriages in the : kadett boker

If you go to the  www.arkeliet.net website, look near the top left of the page for  the word Hjem.  Click on that and a drop down menu will show where you can select English.  You can use this page to look around the website.

The entire site is not in English, but Danish.  You can copy the URL from Danish pages and post it to a Google query window and in some cases you will get a translation.

Ironically, I am building a "cannon deck" at the moment (not a "deck cannon").

I got sick of mowing around the deck cannon, and it probably isn't doing the gun any good sitting there on the ground, so I am building a cannon deck to put the deck cannon on  ;)

Pictures soon.

EXECELLENT!

There is certainly a derth of decks that feature places in which to mount cannons - either deck cannons or swivel cannons!

We need to see some details of the woodwork - plans and pictures to enhance our understanding of how firing salutes can be integrated into day-to-day social activities taking place on the ubiquitous deck in urban America!!!

While building this deck, complete with the outer wall of my "ship", I noticed that there is more to naval cannon design than I thought.

Not only does it have to be compatible with the deck, but it also has to be compatible with the hull.

The barrel has to exit the hole in the ship's side completely or the muzzle blast would tear it apart.

If the rain ever stops, I'll finish this up and take a few pictures.

If the rain continues, I will be changing the design a bit to start resemblng Noah's Ark.

Mine won't be quite so fancy... the wall on mine will just be vertical. I don't have that much energy. The main goal is just to get the cannon off the ground

I can see though where an inward curvature as the wall goes up would allow the barrel to be a little shorter and still stick out the side.

The "beams" are 4x4's, and the "planking" is 2x8's that I have cut tongue's and groove's into the edges for a nicer fit. It's all pressure treated wood. I plan to paint it eventually but pressure treated wood needs to sit outside for a week or so in dry weather before it gets along well with paint.

You know that you're going to have to learn ALL the names of every piece of wood in the thing.   :o
