First Game for my .300 H & H ...
« on: October 14, 2009, 02:34:20 PM »
:) Today I filled my buck antelope tag with the newly rebarreled .300 H & H. It is a 26.5 inch Douglas airga. One shot brought the buck down at about 250 yards. Maybe a bit less maybe a bit more. I would think a bit more. Used a 150 grain WW Silvertip, I handloaded them over a charge of IMR 4350. The performance was perfect. The barrel was put on a custom stocked 700 and it carries a 3.5-10 Leupold.  This was my last antelope tag for this year. The first and second was taken with my Marlin 30-30. Today it would not have been suitable. The first doe was shot with 150 silvertips factory, but the second doe  taken with the .30-30 was shot with a 150 grain WW Hollowpoint factory load. I picked this box up when I leftthe house by mistake. Talk about destructive, you would have hit the doe with a 375 H & H.... :o The damage with the .300 was much less, but the range was much greater.... ;)

Congratulations.

I would seem you have a winner there.

Amazing the .30-30 was so destructive.  Many folks, however, underestimate its ability.

Good job. I am going to start to load the 300 H&H that I inherited from my father. It is a Remington model 721. His load was 68.0grs. of military surplus powder, CCI 250mag. primer with the 180gr. Remington Bronze Point bullet. I am going to try to duplicate it with H4831ssc and a Nosler 180gr. Accubond bullet. May try a 200gr. Accubond too.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr

;) 700, let me know how this turns out.  I haven't loaded a bunch for the  H & H. But have the other .300's. It is such a neat cartridge. ;D May use it later this fall on a prairie whitetail hunt..... ;)

Great cartridge - tons of sex appeal - taped case ejects like butter -I shoot both a M70 and Rem 721 in caliber. Keep a stock of brass as it is often hard to get foe a cycle or two. H 4350 has been accurate for me.

Way to go, WCH!  The 300 H&H is one of THE Classic Cartridges of all time.  As get older (63 and counting) "classic-ness" is way more interesting that efficiency-, raw power-, flat trajectory-, or latest thing-ness.

To illustrate the point I have: 30-30, .35 Rem., and .444 Marlin leverguns; .223, 6.5X55, and .35 Whelen bolt guns; .20 ga., 16 ga., and 12 ga. (not 3 1.2") shotguns; and .38 Spec./.357 Magnum revolvers.

I've never owned a belted magnum and the .300 H&H never stopped at my station but I honor it as one of the top tier classics.

I use the Nosler Accubond 180gr in my Rem700, same primer as you with 69gr of IMR4831 a great cocktail for me anyway. Nothing that get hit by that bullet walks away.

The .300 H&H is my favorite .30 caliber magnum.  I've toyed with rebarreling my 7mm RM to .300 H&H but I keep telling myself it won't be any better than my .30-06.  I don't care for the other .300 Magnums much.  Those .30-30 hollow points are the bomb.

;) I did get photos of the antelope and a fair whitetail I took with it this week, but I am not computer  lit. enough to post them. Will give it a try. The antelope was nothing to write home about, since we have taken a buck for over thirty-five years running, I was not picky...
I just ran the 150 Silvertips I reloaded for the H & H across the crony, 3430fps.  :o :o :o Needless to say I was very surprised. Swampman, the action I used for this was my 700 that had been a 7mm for many years. When my wife was alive she used it extensively, but the barrel was worn, and I wanted a change of caliber......... So I picked the H & H.. If most of your shooting is close, of course it is needless powerful. But for any open shooting to  me they are just the ticket..... If I had realized how fast this H & H was shooting, I would have taken a poke at a huge whitetail this past week. It was across a river bottom . You hunt lots of whitetails I am sure, he didn't waste time getting to a safe escape route, but I didn't shoot due to being a new rifle and load. Had I known the speed, I would have rolled him when he started up the river bank. He was only just a few yards over 300..... I ranged it later. It is new country for me, and I am not familiar with judging distance, plus morning light is easy to misjudge....Anyway, he will probably be there next fall, and I will try and get over during the rut...Honestly, I think you would like the H & H, I gives me much more than any of my 06's, and I shot them extensively for at least 10 years. You may not need the flat traj. often, but like this week, I would have had a huge whitetail, maybe the best I have seen in 50 years of hunting if I would have had one of my .300's that I am familar with......

Wow, that is HOT.
Mind you loaded to 55,000 psi it's quite permissable.
I look forward to seeing those pics.
