696 Smith .44 Special
« on: July 30, 2009, 08:40:04 AM »
I've been looking for one of these but haven't come across one yet.  Think I "need" one.  Is this a smaller frame than a model 29?
Does anyone have one and if so, what kind of accuracy are  you getting...
thanks

I've not seen one for sale in many years really never seen a used one for sale. They are on the L-frame and yes that's smaller and ligher than the N-framed .44 magnums.

S&W has a new version out.  It is called the night gardian 396.  It now has different sights and the glowing front sight option on an all black gun.
They offer it also as a 44mag version.

bagdadjoe,

I've have had one of these S&W 696 for many years now. They are a L-frame. Mine has a patridge front sight and is my go everywhere carry gun. I'm shooting my own cast 245gr Keith bullets over 7.0 grs of Unique. It will group around 1 1/2" or less at 25 yards. Not much for recoil and good knock down power. It's a nice handling piece.
I found mine in an out-of state gun shop while on vacation. I got lucky.

A friend of mine has one which made me want one but I couldn't find one so I bought a Taurus 2" 44 Mag 5 shot medium frame like the 696 L frame but I won't say anymore because Bill might still be listening...  ;D

Nope just those that interest me. I do scan all for subject line to see if I want to open them.

If you really "need" one you can find them on gunbroker, not cheap but it is a really nice gun.

I bought a used 696 at a hardware store about five years ago and it is my favorite carry gun.  It is a 5-shot, L-frame.  When I bought the gun I bought a box of Winchester .44 Special 200 grain Silvertip hollow points.  I fired 5 shots at 25 yards and it was dead on and I have not messed with the gun or the load since then.

Thanks to all.  I've got a couple of good trade items I'll drag to the next L'ville or Lexington gunshow.  Maybe one will pop up.  I've almost moved from "might need" to "gotta have"!

I've had one for many years now.  If you can get your hands on one, you won't regret it!
