Front base sight removal for a 157 topper barell
« on: July 07, 2009, 10:09:27 PM »
I want to remove the front sight Base of my rifle.
Is there an easy way to do this???
I got the front sight out of the dovetail easy enough.
No screws or such.

I heated it up a bit with a torch and not much happened. the blue melted a bit but still intact.

Are these sweated on with silver solder??

I would like to remove it but don't want to de temper the barrell and change the harmonics or release tensions in it as its seems to be shoting just fine as it is.

Just take to it with a grinder and keep the barrell cool???

Thanks
Barra

I got a 157 Hornet bbl that had the sights removed the one on the breech end was dovetailed the one on the muzzle end appears to have a screw or at least there is one filler screw there now. Do not destroy with a grinder there has got to be a better way if you have not ruined the other sight from the dovetail I would like a crack at trading for the sights to put back on my 157 send me a private message if you would like to trade for some thing. Thanks Kurt

PS you sure it's a 157? Are you talking about a shotgun bbl or a centerfire bbl?

Yeah the barrrell clearly states model 157 30-30 calibre.

Got the sight off.

Firgured if it had a screw I could not find it.

If it had a dovetail it would move.

I got a brass dolly and gve it a few wacks. Not to brutal....
I didn't want to heat it.

Pic poor quality but there was a small long bead of silver solder on it brazing it to the barrell.

I have no need for it at the moment......

See how this project goes first.

I may reattach it further down the barrell or put a completely different front sight arrangement on it if I go to peep sights.

Will keep in mind thou your offer.

Ok thanks . I got a threaded hole where mine was that has a filler screw in it now . Keep me in mind as I may be able to drill it and remount to my bbl not a big deal just looking for the astetic value later on down the road. kurt
