faith in law enforcement
« on: July 13, 2009, 02:52:55 AM »
2 incidents involving l.e. First, a former police officer, is trying to clear his name. Seems back in '85, he was accused of child molestation and abuse. Seems the detective on the case, worked on the then 9 and 6 year old kids of the officer, and got them to tell of sexual abuse. Now the kids, 30 and 33, say it didn't happen.I wonder if the then mother of the kids, had anything to do with pushing the charges. They were getting a divorce at the time. Went to court to help clear their fathers name. Hope it happens. 'Course if he hunts down the now retired female detective and puts one between the eyes, I understand.
Second incident, right here in Ohio. Seems a week ago or so, 2 l.e. were out on motorcycles taking a cruise. They were spotted by police air doing over 140mph. That was on I70 going into downtown Columbus. When they finally got pulled over, the Columbus cop that pulled them over, finding out that they were l.e.,one was a Columbus police officer, the other,Ohio State Patrol, didn't write them any tickets. Only way it became public knowledge was the patrolman in the sky was never informed that the 2 speeding bikers were l.e. And when he turned in his report, it became public knowledge. Now there are 3 officers in hot water. Guess this just proves that cops are people to, and can do stupid stuff. gypsyman

Gypsyman, Your last sentence says it all. Cops are people too.  Most are decent, some are dip wads.  And we all make mistakes from time to time.

The SMALL town just south of me, is known for hiring Young law enforcement officers, which, is fine since speeding tickets are what they usually end up with, some officers are very nice, some are jerks, some are just plain power hungry. However, we had a incidient, where LE was called out to  a underage drinking party, according to the kids, the cops were very aggresive toward them, (probably equally guilty i would say) anyways the 4 officers, ended up with about half of the high school football team on them, and they all ended up seeking medical attention. The families of the kids are filing law suits against them....

Heck, we had one officer arrested here last year, for home invasion. After he stopped somone, he ended up breaking into their homes using the info he gathered from the traffic stop. after something like 2 dozen B&Es they finally caught him

Fella I used to work with was (may still be) a reserve officer in central AR.
He often talked about when he'd "get" to shoot someone, and how he'd use his in-car
comm unit to find information about attractive female drivers. He said something about
stuff like that being logged, but that he'd gotten around it for a couple years already.

He also seemed to be pre-disposed to pulling over minorities and letting the attractive women
off the hook for some pretty serious violations. He'd also brag about the view, something like
"women aren't always real modest when you're standing over 'em with a badge."

The few bad cops make it hard for all the rest. It just takes a few in a department to do it. Sometimes it's endemic to the department. Sometimes the cops are good, but they are required to enforce some stupid laws.  There are a lot of reasons that most people are wary of cops.

Fortunately it seems like a lot of the dumb ones end up doing something stupid that gets them flushed out of the LE system earlier than later.
Screw-ups I'm recently familiar with are the two that raped a country club waitress after hours at the club and another one who was caught stealing livestock.

I have a lot of friends that are LEOs, and I always ask them the same thing: why do they get to violate all the traffic laws that they ticket us for? I routinely get passed by marked vehicles at excessive speed w/o their lights on. Reckless driving is the norm, and I've been ran off the road on more than one ocaission by a marked car. I can handle forgetting to hit the switch when responding, but forgetting is so common as to be SOP. No one is above the law, especially those who enforce it. I have a lot of respect for anyone who put themselves in harms way for the sake of others, and I know many are concerned about the integrity of their own ranks.

Faith is a word I think I'd never use in conjunction with my opinion of law enforcement officers. I'll reserve that for use in my relationship with GOD.

I will say also that confidence is not a word I'd use or say I have in most of the LEOs I run into around here locally for the most part. The same seems to apply to a large number of them that come to my attention on a national basis.

For sure there are lots of hard working dedicated LEOs who do a fine job and who do their best to serve the public as their motto is supposed to be but these days far too many get into the job for the power it gives them or the feeling of power over the rest of the non LEO public. How to sort out which is which is the problem.

My B-I-L, the deputy tells the story of how he got a call and had the lights/siren on passing cars left and right to get there and the comm center called him off.
He slows down and stops at the next convenience store to get a drink and donut. One of the ladies he passed earlier stops at the store too and gives him the evil eye the whole time for using lights and siren just to get to the fresh donuts!

We had a young OHP fly a new state owned z28 off of a curved overpass a few years ago.
He was driving over 150mph in town in a 45mph zone responding to a non injury accident.
 ???

For the most part I have had good luck with L.E.
Just don't get mad at them because they caught you breaking the law.

Remember they have to enforce the stupid laws our politicians come up with.
