looking for a new barrel.

i have a 209x50 and would like to try a new one. i was thinking of a 30-06 and was wondering if anyone has tryed one and how is the recoil. the 209 is about all i want for recoil with 3 pellets. if i am not careful the scope comes real close to bitting me as it is. how about a 220 swift or 22-250 any problems with these barrles shooting. or any suggestions. i want to shoot varments and deer. maby a 25-06 i am not sure.

You might also consider a .243, for a dual purpose round. I think it is better than the 22's for deer. And with light bullets, better than 25-06 for varmints. :D

Onesonek hit it right on the head.  I have a .243 that I use for varmint hunting and deer hunting.  I load 58 grain V-max's to about 3700 fps for varmint and 95 grain SST's for deer.  They both shoot great and I am going to get a 243 for my Encore as soon as funds allow.

If you drop down to 100-120 grains of powder in the 209X50, your sholder and eye will like you for it :grin: . You can also save some money as anything over 120 grains doesn't burn anyway :shock:. The 30-06 is a great cartridge  but I perfer something with a little less recoil and chose the 7MM-08. Don

I too started out with the 209 x 50 and then added a 24" 7m-08 barrel.  I really like this caliber but I do think you might be surprised at the recoil.  Now I am not all that recoil sensative shooting other rifles in 30-06 and 7mm.  But with the lightness of this rifle it does have substantial recoil.  I solved the problem with replacing the factory recoil pad with a Sims recoil pad. Difference was nite and day.
