Idea! for the old oversize 44 magnum barrels
« on: July 15, 2009, 08:41:27 AM »
Idea!

Those of us that have an older version “oversize” 44 Magnum barrel, one of mine is one of these.  How about sending it to Mr. York for a re-chamber and re-bore to one of the following cartridges.  The 44 Magnum max case lengths are 1.285”.  The 480 Ruger max case lengths are 1.285” and bullet diameter of .475”, and the 500 Special max case lengths are 1.285” and bullet diameter of .500”.  Another would be the 475 Linebaugh at 1.384” max case length and the .475” bullet diameter.  Since all are rimmed cases, no problem there.  All fall between the 44 Magnum and 500 S&W Magnum power/pressure levels, no problem there.  There are lots of cast bullets of .475” and .500” diameters so no problem there.  Only problem I see is deciding which one?

I'd have gone with the 480 Ruger, but Wayne doesn't do it or the .500" bores.  :-\ You could go with a .50AK tho.  ;)

What an Idea Killer...

Maybe the Tykempster can take one of these oversize 44 magnum barrels and re-chamber and re-bore to .458 for the 450 Nitro Express 3.25" (44K PSI) that would give him 20-25 more grains than the 45-120.  ;D

The 450NE-3Ό" really has nothing on the 45-120 when loaded to the same pressure, Tyler's holds 125gr h2O, mine holds 123gr IIRC, Ammoguide lists 114.4gr for the 45-120 and 119.7gr for the 450NE..  ;) I think there would be a problem with going from a .432" bore to a .458", I'm pretty sure Wayne requires a .030" difference for a rebore to be sure to completely remove all of the old rifling.  :-\

There is the 450 Nitro Express #2 II 3-1/2" also.

One of the problems though with some of the NE cases is thin walls.

Other idea for oversize 44s--tomato stakes.  At least the termites won't eat them. :D

Could you rechamber for .410 and shoot big lead bullets sized to .430 or so out of it for shotgun only states that allow for the .410 for deer?  Maybe a 350 - 400 gr bullet at 1400-1500 fps?
