Blackhawk Convertible vs Blackhawk Bisley
« on: May 13, 2009, 06:36:23 PM »
How well does the Convertible shot both 45c and 45acp?  Or would I be better off going with a blackhawk bisley in 45lc with 7 1/2" barrel compared to the 5 1/2"?

Should I stay away from the blued gun and get the stainless?  I just read an old post on another site saying the blued guns had rusting problems.  The Convertible and Bisley only come in blued, but I could get a blackhawk in 45c in stainless.

Thanks

I admit, I am prejudged: I like stainless. I also like .45 Convertibles, in stainless, with 5 ½” barrels, a configuration Ruger seldom makes. What I have done is buy 7 ½” SS .45 Colt NMBH and send them to the factory for a 5 ½” barrel swap and a .45 ACP cylinder. I then took them to a gunsmith and had the cylinders trimmed about 0.030” so I could load .45 Auto Rim as well as .45 ACP in the .45 ACP cylinder. Mine are a few years old. They had tight chamber throats and usually had bad forcing cones. After I fixed that stuff, they shoot very well. I understand the new ones may have had these problems corrected by new tooling in manufacturing.

I also have one of the 5 ½” SS .45 Colt Bisleys. It is a nice gun, but I find I prefer the grip of the NMBH over the Bisley grip. Just a matter of personal preference.

What's the velocity difference between the 5.5 and 7.5 inch barrels?

Could be as much as 100 fps, but probably less.

I would keep it simple and just go with a Bisley.

If it's these two you're considering, I'm thinking the 45 ACP isn't a deciding factor.  First, handle a Bisley to make sure you like it.  Many do, myself included, but some find the grip awkward and a bit uncomfortable.   While not cataloged models, there were stainless 5 1/2" Bisleys made in both 45LC and 45LC/45 ACP models that can still be found pretty easily. Likewise, there were stainless convertable BH's made as well but are far less common.

I have 4 Bisleys and 2 Blackhawks, and I have to admit, I am really sold on the Bisley grip. To me that would be the deciding factor.

was thinking that i would love the bisley...not so much.  do love the 5.5 though.  5.5 guns have blackhawk grip frame not super grip frame it a bit shorter.  i dont feel much of diferance in handling.  when you go to buy a new grips make sure you dont buy super blakhawk grips, they dont fit.

I had a chance to shoot both the rbh 7 1/2 and a SS 5.5 Bisley.  Both 45 Colt using 255 Grn swc over 8.5 of Unique.  The Bisley was much more controlable and that was what I bought, (cost me $500 used but I am happy!) 8)  Since have shot the 300 XTP and this gun is a pleasure to shoot with that load and will be my whitetail gun. ;D
