Leupold Scope mount/rings for FA 454 Premier
« on: July 28, 2009, 06:33:51 PM »
i justified purchasing a used scope as a birthday gift for myself. Now, i need to consider the rings and base. I thought I read in a previous post that the Leupold base is positioned too far back. i will be using it for a Leupold 2x EER scope. Pretty sure the FA catalog prices the Leupold mount and rings 'round 66.00.   Opinions on whether this is a good set-up? What factors do you look for?

Benny,

This thread may answer some of your questions

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,177315.0.html

Go FA website http://freedomarms.com/ and click on Accessories for pictures of Leupold setup (Also, TSOB and Lovell)

As indicated, I bought (from Midway USA) the Weigand base and Leupold vertical split rings for my Model 83.  Also bought a TSOB from Freedom Arms (using the same Leupold vertcal split rings) for my Model 87.

I really like the way the 2x Leupold sits on the TSOB.

Heres' a picture.  Hope Ken doesn't puke when he sees my matte blue 4x Leupold on the otherwise all silver gun.  Sorry Ken, I got a real good deal on the scope:

FA97 5 1/2" With TSOB, Leup Vert Split Rings and 2x Leupold.

FA83 6" With Weigand, Leup Vert Split Rings and 4x Leupold.

The T'SOB provides the most flexibility but my favorite is the Lovell

I did view the link provided before posting but I still wasn't sure what to look for in a good mount. In two of the photo's--where the TSOBmount is used-- scope is mounted in two different locations. The eyepiece is significantly further back on one of them. i am unsure if this adustability is meant for adjusting eyerelief based on the type of optic, the position the shooter is in, or maybe to offset recoil by keeping it more forward. Also are thre rings needed? Is it more of a weight to dampen the recoil?

The reason I like the leupold mount is that it matches their model scopes (in my case the 2x Leupold EER) however its not clear why the mounting position is an issue.

Aesthetically i like the Lovell mount though i wish it matched the finish of the FA Premier a little better. i would like to make a decision on the nect few days. Comments appreciated. Btw, really nice pics Axeman and Paul 105

The examples of those vertically split rings I have seen were aluminum and virtually weightless...  I think you will find that SSK and FA will recommend the three ring set-up on the T'SOB for the heavy kickers like the 454 and up... I use three rings on my FA 44 Mag with a T'SOB base.   So far as the mounting position there is the eye relief of the scope and the one variable that nobody can answer but you...  Your shooting position... You need to perhaps take the gun, scope, and some duct tape and see exactly where your scope needs to be...

benny234 there is a scope mount listed on gunbroker that you should really consider. It is a very early Freedom Arms mount and rings. They sold for just under 100.00 back in the late 80's. What I like about the mount set up, is that it will maintain zero when removed, and reinstalled. Here is a link for the web sight http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=135761300 . Better get a bid in on it before I decide to bid own another one. By the way the set is a perfect match to the Premier grade finish. I have had all but the Lovell mount and like this mount is the best in my opinion because of it’s maintaining zero capabilities.

benny123 if you would like, I can send you pictures of what the Leupold 2x, 4x, and the 2.5-8x power look like with the mounts on Freedom revolvers.

I would appreciate the pics, thanks. Immediately following work i shot the Casull. unfortunately I only had 30 minutes till they closed, and I forgot my gloves, so i just the shot 50 LC rounds.

one thing ive noticed is that the only way i assure i can eject spent cartridges is if I hold the cylinder while depressing the rod. otherwise it wont eject fully. Is this typical?

benny123 no my gunbrker user name is the same as it is here. If I had to guess it is big800, that has put a bid in on the mount. They are fairly rare, and there is some collector value to them. I will get you some pictures.

Benny123 here are the pictures of the scope mounts I was talking about.

This one is a Preimer grade 500 Wyoming Express 7 1/2" octagon barrel with the 2-5 to 8 power Leupold scope.

This one is a Preimer grade 454casull with Field grade finish and a 6 7/8" octagon barrel with the 4 power Leupold scope. You can see in the pictures that this style mount does match the Preimer grade better than the Field grade finish.

I like the simplicity of the mount. It's a clean look. Your Freedom Arms' are really sharp. Curious, are the grips add-on's or are they collectors editions.

Benny123 they are custom order revolvers, with special grips scrim shawed by Freedom Arms ex employee Karen Walker in the 80's.

This gun was custom ordered from the factory back in the late 80's. The grips are elephant ivory. Serial number is FL000D2.

This gun was also a custom order from the factory, I asked Karen if she would scrimshaw the elk on the bone micarta grips for me in 2003. The serial number on this one is D-MY.454 .

Easy to forget how big the web is. I am not married to it, SJ454 mentioned it, and I liked it but I could always go with another type. If i don't get that base I won't be disappointed.

I almost lost out on that Leupold I won as someone tried to outbid me at the last second. I'm pretty sure he waited till there were just a few seconds left. You gotta be fast! That's what ya get for trying to pick up cool stuff on the cheap. Serves me right.

benny234 here is a picture of the Beuhler mount and rings.
This is the rarest of all the mounts offered for the Freedom Arms 83.

I do have the factory Buehler mount and ring boxes. They are marked in red ink Freedom Arms on the end of the boxes, I am planning on listing this very rare mount and rings set on gunbroker with an opening bid of 100.00 and no reserve.

SJ offered me one of his mounts so I won't be bidding on the 'above'. i just checked it and it's at 41.00 with 6days left.

Received the mount in perfect condition, SJ. One thing I had to do though was shave a little metal off the Leupold base. It just would not fit flush into the divot below the rear sight. The back was fine but the front section had to be trimmed. I shaved just enough of metal for it to sink in.

I will now test my accuracy with the Leupold scope at the range this evening. Thanks.

stevejr454,

I "scan through" the F-A board on occasion just to "sniff" the post and look at the pics of the F\A revolvers. I just wanted to comment on the apparent work of art that those grips you have seem to be. Very nice stuff.

I'm still in the thinking mode of buying a F-A. Right now I shoot 44 mag's and if I were to get a F\A, I believe it would be in 454. However,  I've never shot a 454 so....it may be a good idea for me to call around to the local ranges here that rent their guns and find a range that has a 454.

Some guys tell me they can't stand the recoil, some guys tell me they love shootin their 454's. Me, I love shootin my 44 magnums......so...I'm thinkin I'd love to shoot the 454. Maybe I wouldn't shoot 50 or 75 rounds like I do my 44. I dunno. Maybe I'd only shoot 25 to 30. But.....I like big bangs, and I like shootin. Heck....I like shootin 22's, who am I kiddin.  ;D

Thank you Davemuzz,
Karen is a true artist in my opinion. I wish she was still scrimshawing, I would have her scrimshaw some more grips for me.

You should have no problem shooting full house 454 loads out of a Freedom revolver if you have been shooting stout 44mag loads in a Ruger. In my opinion Ruger S/A seem to have a little more bite them.

stevejr454

benny123,
Glad to hear the mount is working out for you.
