Drop in Hammer
« on: July 09, 2009, 09:02:41 AM »
I am looking to improve my trigger on my 10/22, I have had it about 12 or 15 years and every few years I do something to it.  This year I would like to put in a drop in hammer. I am looking for some advice on this.  I have been looking on midway usa at the Power Custom Hammer kit and the Power Custom Hammer and Sear kit.  I like the price of the just the hammer kit, but I don't know if it is necessary for me to get the sear also.  This is a squirrel hunting gun, not a match gun, It doesn't have to be perfect.  But if it is worth the money i will get the sear also.  From what I read on some reviews it doesn't look like it makes that much difference.  I am green to messing with this stuff so really don't know any better, just looking for some advice.

If you want something really nice, buy a KIDD trigger. It is a straight, drop in, replacement.

The only problem with the KIDD trigger is, is that it costs as much as another 10/22.

I have one installed in a 10/22 DSP... It was well worth the money, in shooting pleasure.

I think it would be great to have but don't have the budget for it, plus this gun is mostly for hunting.

I have a full custom 10/22 and would say just get the hammer from PowerCustoms and then while your trigger is out add an overtravel screw and flip the trigger return spring assembly so the plunger is inseted first and the spring contacts the trigger. just the return spring assembly flip will give you a 100% better trigger. reason being is the friction between the trigger and off-centered plunger.
All this should cost less them $40 and the results are so good you'll kick your own butt for not doing it years ago.

You might want to look at a Volquartson target hammer. You should find one online for around 40.00

From what I have seen it doesn't make much of a difference.  http://ruger22.com/newpages/review-pc-vq.htm

Man, those things have went up. When I bought mine the combo was $40, the hammer by itself was $18. I just stone my own now. The first 10/22 I bought had the pc hammer still in it last winter. I got bored and took it down to just over a pound. It is my spray painted camo hunting rifle. The receiver with no mods besides the target hammer was good enough for 15 or so years. And in all honesty didn't need anything done I just thought I would since I had finished all my winter projects.

What you can expect is your trigger pull to go from long, grainy and over 8# to short, crisp and in the 3# area give or take. So you will see the results on targets and game. In general a hammer will cut groups by more than half. Then a bentz chambered heavy barrel will cut  them by more than half again since the nasty old barrel band gets to go away.
Good Luck
