old hickory nessmuck

did this friday 6" old hickory skinner knife reshaped the blade & handle with files,
took 1 3/4 hours but worth it the sheath was made by my nephew his first one he has ever made he is 11 years old he did a darn good job for his age.the  scales are native australian black cypress pine,don't let the pine word fool you this is a hard wood and that's it's natural color.

Nice work on  that. I did the same thing a few years ago on a different, but similarly shaped, blade and it turned into a nice skinner.  Last I heard it's on the belt of a missionary in South America.  The sheath is also especially nice.  I know full grown makers who can't do that well.

I have done several of those with the Old skinners and I am going to do a monster Nessie with a couple Old Hickory cleavers.

I'm gonna try this. I just bought the Old Hickory skinner. How did you remove the original handle. Just tap out the rivets ? Can I reuse the rivets in a new handle ? Just retired in January and have "not enough " time on my hands to do stuff like this.

The rivets can't be re-used; they're pounded together as a male/female join. If you're going to put different wood on it, then getting the handle off is easy.  The rivet heads are quite thin, so it's a matter of removing them on one side with a grinder or a file, they just tap them out.  I'm sure there are other ways.
