Sight Problem with Buff Classic
« on: September 19, 2009, 05:27:58 PM »
Finally got my new classic out today.  first off it is pretty accurate.  Factory 405 cluster into 1 1/2-2" at 100 with the peep sight.  Handloads with the same bulet good as well, but a full 18" to the left .  Adj the peep as far over as possible and gained 6".  Drifted the front sight over to the left and gained another 6" that leaves it still hitting about 8" to the left.  Sights look a bit funky slid over that way as well.  Pulled the rear sight, put on the proper base and a Leupy 6X.  No problem centering so at least the holes must be tapped straight..it must be the front sight.  scope is ok but Ireally want to use the peep.  Suggestions??

Thanks,

Lefty

Check to see if the dovetail flat is level, the BC Carbine has been reported with the dovetail cut so one side is higher which would cant the sight to one side.

It's the front sight dovetail.  I put it in my mill vise and you really see its not perpendicular to the barrel.  I dont see how it could be straightened out w/o cutting off that portion of barrel and cutting a new dovetail.  Pretty sloppy quality for sure.  I would return it to remington but would probably get more of the same.   Will cut it off, new dovetail and recrown.  One advantage I guess of having 30 + inches of barrel.  The accuracy of this barrel is there so its worth doing the work to get it right.  I am going to get a new williams rear sight that has more adjustments and target knobs.

Kinda figured that was the problem, get the elevation gib lock knob(FAQs) from Brownell's too, then it's fully adjustable without a screwdriver.  ;)

Torpedoman,

Both the factory load and my handloads shot about 18 to the left.  Both grouped well..actually VG.

I think I would be tempted to just make the front sight blade vertical with respect to the barrel and leave the dovetail at an angle.  I built up a tall Handi front sight for a peep rear, and I could have put the blade on at any angle I wanted.  I milled a slot in the sight and then silvered in the blade.  Larry

Trott,

Might make a new sight as you suggested or mill the dovetail square and stake the old sight in place. I like the globe type sight with the inserts.  Just as stated in the FAQ that fron sight was one tight SOB to get off.  Going to think about this for a while before I start cutting.

If it were mine, I'd just send the barrel back, but I don't have any machining skills either.

I looked up the FAQ's about this and did the control F search and couldn't find anything about the gib lock.  I got on brownells and found what I think you're talking about.  Is this it?

It's listed in one of the sight threads, probably the long range sights.

Thanks for the link!

I was kind of hoping this would be an iron sight with repeatable click sights, but it wasn't.
