materials for building carriage

OK so what type of materials do yall use for building a carriage? wood, steel? If wood what type of wood and where do you get it? I saw that some use 1bys glued together for a nice wood bed for mortars///

In America the first choice for artillery carriages, and mortar beds has been white oak.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

I get mine from a small local lumber mill down the street from me. They cut it to whatever size I want.  I generally get 3"  thick white oak. It comes "green" and has to sit for several months to dry before use.

He charges me about 80 cents a board foot, which is way cheaper than Home Depot would charge for their "1 inch", which isn't anywhere near 1 inch thick.


So, look for a local mill and make friends with the guy.

thanks guys, If anyone has done this in wisconsin let me know where you got the materials from, I spent some time searching for lumber mills here and haven't come up with anything yet, I'm sure theres something I missing. the amish has got to have some available (but its hard to get ahold of them via computers since Im fairly certain they dont have them ;D

look possibly under "pallets". Many small lumber mills make pallets as well as lumber.
