a new 414 SuperMag owner!

Howdy All you DW fans.   :D
Just picked up my first centerfire DW, it's a 414 SuperMag.  I've been lookin for a site such as this.  I loaded some rounds this weekend using 26.5 of LilGun, Winchester Large Rifle Primers and several brands of 210 grain jacketed bullets.  Gettin to try them out this coming friday.

Is it really ok to shoot magnums through this gun?

:gun4: Rob  The 41 Supermag is a nice shooting pistol.  Back in 1994 Wesson made 25 of these guns for us Numbers 25-53 Front cover Gun World Dec 1994.  I don't remember, I think the skipped numbers were in the middle.  Very short run before they went belly up.  Our Load data goes up to 1765 fps/210 gr. (not for reprint) This flat shooting gun is a real pleasure to shoot.  I have 340 gr cast  LBT's for my self.  I have The Silhoutte Load data I can send you.  41 Mag TC barrels are very hard to find but if you run accross a 14 incher, they convert to the 414 in a snap.  Factory people always told us NOT to shoot the 44 through the 445, 357 mag through 357 Supermag or as (Max) as some people know it.  41Mag - 414SM etc.  This has always been a liability issue.  I say ask the factory.  Let me know

414SM-E.T.Gates,
I did ask DW about using 41mag rounds in the 414SM, their site says you can use them but the manual cautions against it.  I just got their reply and it was this...."You can use 41 mags in the 414 supermag, you just have to keep the gun clean to prevent build up in the cylinder.  Thanks".....  The responder to my question didn't leave their name.  OK, I'm fine with that.

Anyway, I would like to take you up on that Silhoutte Load data, please and thank you very much.

I did have a 14 inch 414 SM barrel for my contender, but hind sight tells me that selling that gun was foolishness.   I liked it very much, easy shootin.

I've been interested in getting a DW in 414 SM since reading a mention about it in Big Bore Sixguns by John Taffin.  I also learned that Mr Taffin had written something about the 414 in Aug 2000 GUNS magazine.  I've ordered that article.  I'm interested in any article on the caliber or any other calibers used in the DW firearms.

Anything you want to say about the supermag series, I'm all ears.

Thanks
Rob

Hello,
Congrats on your new purchase! While I don't yet have any experience with the .414, my first handgun when I turned 21 (some 17 years ago) was a Dan Wesson 357 maximum. I reciently became the proud owner of a 445 supermag. I'm a big fan of the supermag series. Thanks to Dan Wesson and Mr Gates for all their work!

As to your question concerning firing the 41 mag in the supermags, yes it can be done. This is directly from the Dan Wesson Website www.danwessonfirearrms.com

.41 Magnum and .41 Special in the .414 SuperMag?
The reason that we and the 2 previous manufacturers of the Dan Wesson design revolver do not recommend using the shorter cartridges in the SuperMag revolvers (i.e. .41 Special and .41 Magnum in the model 414 or 7414) is to protect ourselves from any potential liability resulting from someone trying to get SuperMag performance from the smaller cartridges and blowing up the revolver and causing injury to themselves and anyone nearby. The .414 SuperMag is capable of firing the .41 Magnum and the .41 Special cartridges, as well as the .414 SuperMag cartridge. Please observe the following two cautions:
1. do not attempt to load either the .41 Magnum or the .41 Special cartridges with the intention of gaining SuperMag performance from them, but rather follow very strictly the safe recommended loads in the powder, bullet or cartridge companies' reloading manuals;
2. be sure to thoroughly remove any residue build up in the chambers from the shorter cartridges before attempting to load the longer SuperMag cartridges into the chambers, or you will be jamming them into the residue and will either not be able to fully insert them into the chambers, or will experience difficulty with extraction of the empty brass.

Hope this helps!

Congratulations on your new purchase. The DW SM looks to be a fine revolver. I've been playing with the .414SM for some time now in both the T/C and a converted five-shot Ruger Maximum. I won't give out my loads for either of these as they border on the ludicrous! I'm getting @1600fps with a 210gr jacketed bullet from a 7.5 inch Ruger Redhawk, too. The experimentation stopped there. I'm now having an Encore .41Magnum barrel chambered to .410GNR to play with for awhile. When I tire of that, a .411/.348Win is a possibility. Right now, the DW .414SM is about number six on my short list. Let us know how it shoots. RKBA!

:gun4: Joe this is a great site I like all these Ideas we have.  I've done the 348-41.  The 348 cases are abit hard to blow out to 50 cal or 1/2 inch. and then neck back down to 41.  I do have a die that was made for that very thing.  At the time the sleves you put in this die were 15 bucks a pop.  It went from 50 cal down to 7mm. process I think is four or five sleves.  I think we can buy the brass from starline now.  50 AK.  My dream for a 41 is a 3.5" case in 50 necked to 410 in a side by side with 500 gr bullets to start.  A 3 barrel verson ext hammers would come later.  All under 1000.00 bucks.  We need a gun maker that would produce a good quality receiver interchange barrels, etc.  Pie in the Sky? I'm working on the design.  My old Fox side by side shotgun converted to 41 cal is a good starting point.  Guess we all like 41's
