Plunger tube ?
«
on:

I'll be replacing a plunger tube on a 1911 and was wondering if you folks might have opinions on what brand might be better than others. Both Brownells and Midway carry the staking tools so that won't be a problem.
Thanks,Bill

copen: plunger tubes are plunger tubes. I would get a mil-spec tube and replace it. They should all be within spec, so there shouldn't be any difference.

Thanks. I noticed at least one brand,Ed Brown I believe, states longer mounting studs. Wondering if that should be a consideration.

copen: you said you're shooting a 1911. I'm going to assume it is a more current 1911A1 made to mil-spec or better with bells and whistles. A standard plunger tube should suffice; longer mounting studs (actually hollow for staking) will have to be ground or filed flat so nothing extends into the magazine well.
It just depends on how much extra you wan tto spend for name brand when even surplus will suffice. jmtcw.

Thanks Mikey.
Actually, it's a rebuild from an older damaged frame. Just curious. What type of staking tool do you use/prefer, the C clamp or Vise-Grip type?
Thanks again. Bill

I like the C-Clamp style, but get the rod that goes in the plunger tube so you don't crush it. Other wise you will need the special drills to open it back up.

I agree with rbwillnj on the clamp style - and make sure you get the rod. Good luck.

Thanks folks.
I've got a set of numeric drill bits that should have a size I can use to slide in the tube to help protect it if if a rod doesn't come with the clamp and saddle.
I appreciate it.

Also, use a small ball end grinder on a dremel to camfer the inside edge of the holes (from the magazine well) that creates an area for the plunger tube studs to expand into and creates more secure mount.

Sounds like a worthwhile extra step. Figured there'd be some good info here.
