"Daybreakers"
Luis L'Amour
Nelson Doubleday,INC, Garden City, New York
Copyright, Bantam Books Inc.

The fourth book in the wonderful "Sackett" series, This is the first to take place in the West as we know it. The previous thee books followed the travels of the first Sackett as he journyed to the New World and settled in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennesse. This book starts off a couple hundred years later with the introduction of Tyrel and Orin Sasckett. It starts in the hills of Tennesse with Tyrel finishing a long standing feud with the Higgens Clan by killing the last Higgens to save his brother Orin. Long Higgens had just taken a shot at Orin as Orin was standing up to be married. The shot missed as his fiancee stepped in and took the bullet. Tyrel moved in and outdrew the Long Higgens as he was starting to finish the unarmed Orin. Fleeing Tennesse to avoid problems with the Law, who also happened to be kin, Tyrel joins a cattle outfit heading west. He is soon joined by Orin, who is fleeing Tennesse after the loss of his wife-to-be. What follows is an interesting and informative adventure as the two Sackett brothers make friends, educate themselves, and become involved in the Land Grant fights of old Santa Fe.Anyone who has seen the movie"The Sacketts", this is one oif two books that movie was base on, the other being "Sackett!".

This book is in the top three of my favorite Sackett books. It introduces two of the main Sackett characters, the third being Tell Sackett who is introduced in "Sackett!". It is told in the first person, as if old Tyrel himself is telling you what happened. It is a good read and a must for the Luis L'Amour fan. The version I read was part of a five volume set of the entire Sackett series published by Doubleday. Bantam, I believe, does most of the publishing of LL book.

Well, that's enough fer now! Good readin', and keep your powder dry!! :D

Actually, I think it was the sixth book of the series, if you are talking about year and events. But I do agree with you about it being a must read book. Very good book

I forgot about "Jubal Sackett" and "Ride the River" for some reason. I have the five volume set and those two are in the last volume for some reason. If ya look at the various copyright dates, the publishing of the books jumps all over the place.

Yeah you're right , if you try and figure them out by the date they were wrote you could really get confused. I think Jubal was supposedly one of the last books that he wrote, and I think that  Ride The River may have fell in that line also.

I watched an interview they had with his daughter here about 8 months ago and they were talking about possibly filling in the gap between Ride The River and Daybreakers. I hope they do.
