I've been having a hard time buying guns lately.
« on: July 19, 2009, 11:22:57 AM »
Hi.  I've been having a hard time buying guns lately.  The problem is I am the III and my driver's license cuts off at II.  There aren't enough spaces on the license to print my entire name.  I've tried going back to the DMV, but they say there's nothing they can do.  There is at least one place who has refused all future gun sales to me because of the problem.  I've also been hassled at other places as well.  Apparently there is a crackdown in my area by the ATF and everybody is on high alert.  Any advice you can offer?  Thanks.  Robert

The great gun rush of 08/09 has leveled off and is almost over, they will be begging for your money soon. All the gun shops are fat and down right rude right now,(here in S Florida anyway) not to mention way over priced. They have some lean times coming, wait it out.

I suppose I'm lucky to live in the location i'm in b/c the gun shops around here are for the most part courteous and happy to do business w/ me.  I've never had a problem in getting a gun to pass bg check.  I've found that for the most part, stores around here are more than happy to deal or do business w/ me and my friends/family, But I do hope things improve for you sir.

I bought a 870 riot gun this weekend at the gun show without a hitch and the dealer sat and talked w/ me for about 20 mins after I made the sale, even though his table was busy.

Last three guns I bought I had to wait 3 days.  I found out when I renewed my liscense.  There is another person in California with my name that has an outstanding warrent for bad checks.  So, I was asked if I have ever been in California which I have not and they said they just had to check.  I did get my liscense, and I have a concealed carry permit.  They always have to double check.  It is aggrivating, so they have to double check with my social security number.  I also live in a college town, and I ran into a kid at a grocery store who had my name on his nametag.  I told him I liked his name and told him mine.  Guess my name is too common.

I always list my SSN for my BG Check.  I've had some buddies that did not want to use theirs and have had them delayed.  SSN just helps weed out the not-you's so that they can run your check faster and w/ more accuracy.

DIxiedude.  So you think you have problems………..recently a fraternal organization I belong to raffled off a Browning A-Bolt 270.  The winner was a guy named Jessie Gonzales, when the dealer called for his background check he was put on hold, after a few minutes another person came on line, he was put on hold again, and when the third person answered the dealer was told they would call him back.  Three days later, still no call so the dealer called again, gave the person all the information on the previous call and was again put on hold, they came back and said they would call back, after 3-4 days he finally got a call back at which time the he was told there were over 600K people in the system with the same name.

Having a concealed permit takes all the wait out and makes it much easier to buy. 8)

Having a concealed carry permit only helps if you live in a state that has NIX Exempt.  Alaska did when the program started, back in the early 90s, but did away with the NIX Exempt status in about 2005 or 2006.  Dept Of Public Safety claims they do not have the manpower to run the checks.  That was the major issue Sara Palin fired Walt Monaghan over, his refusal to hire more people.  Currently we are having to undergo all checks just like everyone else.

Back when we had NIX Exempt status some stores refused to accept it (Sportsman's, Sports Authority, and Wall-Mart) and did the background check anyway.

I agree 100%.  All these gun stores with $1500 price tags on $1100 AR's and $850 price tags on $400 AK's are going to be hurting.  From what I've seen lately the prices are coming down, but nobody is buying them.  I've got a few items on my wishlist that I'm going to wait another week or two before I get more serious just because I think the patience will save me money.

I'm wanting a couple of ARs but decided to wait and see if the prices come down.  I'm in no hurry.

I wouldn't wait too much longer bud.  Not that i'm in a hurry myself, but the prices on lowers have dropped $50-70 dollars and parts kits are just about back to normal.  A tier 1 AR will run you anywhere from 900-1100 dollars and anything lesser is pretty much worth it as well.  I don't think they are going to get much lower as they are almost on par from where they were about a year and a half ago.

I've been following AR prices for a while.  A great deal on a colt 6920 a couple weeks ago was 1300, two weeks ago a great deal was under 1200, and a within this last week I've seen them for less than 1100.

I watched DPMS sweet 16's go for over $1000 and now you can get then for $800 or less.  A bushmaster 20" A3 target model used to be over $1100 as well, but now they are around 900.

All of these are online prices, but I'm going to wait at least another week before buying a new rifle.  At some point though you're not going to be saving much more than you could buy it for today.
