Just wondering if the 357 Mag Handis have been around long enough for anyone to think about a 35 Remington rechamber, or has already done one?

Haven't thought about a 35 Rem but am thinking hard about stretching my 357 mag Contender barrel out to 357 Max. I can get close to 35 Rem ballistics, still shoot 38's and 357's and still use the same reloading dies. IMHO.

REAM..REAM...REAM.  Merrily I REAM along. ;D  It looks like my 2nd .357 may be coming up for some surgery ;)

Pete nailed it, both is the best choice!!  ;D For a handloader using an action stronger than leverguns and pointy bullets, the 35 Rem can reach well beyond 200yds, it's no 35 Whelen which is another option as well as the 356 or 358 Win.  ;)

I have really been thinking about doing that to one of my barrels.  I like the mags, love the maxies and lust after the rem. :-* in the Handi.  I'm sure that is not a hand ream job, should be done on a machine to be right.  If Larry lived closer to Montana, I'd offer my services as an apprentice to learn all this neat stuff he's doing.  Course the way I measure things, :-[ I can hear it now, "YER FIRED! :D  DP

I am a newbie at this, but isn't the .357 Mag/Max typically barreled for .357 jacketed and the .35 Remington typically barreled for .38 jacketed. I like the idea of shooting jacketed handgun bullets at 200fps more than a Max can, but am not sure what that will get me other than blowing up rotten clementines into tinier pieces. I have a .357 Max Handi and a .35 Rem Microgroove lever.  My thought is that for cast, the Max offers whatever velocity you need and more, and the rechambered .35 Rem might just be a hair tight for 200 gr+ jacketed. There are really few .358 jacketed bullets available by the way.

You can shoot lead bullets in a 35 Remington chambering. I own a Remington Model 141 slide-action in 30 remmy, it shoots lead bullets very well. Better than my Winchester 94 lever-gun.

If I had a .357 Handi barrel the chamber would be reamed to .35 remmy.

.358" Jacketed bullets work just fine in the .357 barrel.  ;)

JP,
I have had excellent results with 1680 powder and the 180 HornadySSP and 180 Speer FP. I will have to go down stairs and get you my load but it is near max in my gun and once I got up near max the groups really began to shrink. Its good for just over 1" at 100 yrds, and it chrono's about 2200 fps in my handi.
I also had a severe leading problem. Seems the previous pwner shot 38 wad cutters exclusively!!  I bought the gun with two boxes of Remington bullets with two rounds gone. He said it recoiled too much for him! I spent days cleaning that barrel out!!!

A word about the SSP at velocies over 2000fps. I find it is a bit fragile on Mr Whitetail. It goes in but rarely comes out.
