Filling a hollow synthetic butt stock

I would like to fill the buttstock on my Rem 700 SPS varminter in an effort to increase the weight as the heavy barrel (.223) makes the rifle extremely muzzle heavy. What would be a good, dense material to use? Thanks!

If the cavity is suitable to do this, put some lead shot in a baggie and stuff it in.  It worked in my AR until I bought one of the commercial lead weights.

i used a can of spray foam insulation.  not much weight but enough on that shotgun.

Lead shot in an old sock works great. You can also use foam packing peanuts stuffed ahead of and around the weight to hold it in position, the peanuts work better than expanding foam as they can be removed easily.

PLEASE don't use spray in insulation!!!!   I did this on a remington stock and a year or two later, the recoil pad fell off.  I thought...what the heck?  When I looked at it closer, I saw that the screws that held the pad onto the stock had rusted clean through. I think either the stuff let's off moisture or theres an acidic or alkali property to it and it ate the screws. 

BTW...the gun is stored in very dry environment, so that wasn't the issue.

the ones that have a bolt hole the whole way through them, are easy. get 2 rolls of nickels, they fit almost perfectly.

    If you are filling a hollow synthetic buttstock, I would seriously consider just filling it with regular glass marbles, which you can find anywhere.  Glass is pretty heavy stuff.  Non-toxic, durable etc.

I know of a person who filled his hollow butt stock with sand and just placed the recoil back on.  I guess when filling it all the way it eliminates any noise, and sand is pretty darn heavy.

A buddy of mine once bought some "bargain" electronics from the back of van. When he brought it home of course it didn't work and he asked me to check it out. Opened up the stereo and it was empty. Only thing inside was what looked like a whole tube of clear silicone caulk, the kind you use for weatherproofing. It definitely gave the stuff a heavy solid feel and didn't rattle or shake. Would probably be perfect for your purposes as it doesn't move, it can be removed and its real cheap. hope it helps.

Thanks for the replies. What I ended up doing was filling the buttstock with bondo and birdshot. The Remington 700 SPS Varminter with its bull barrel in .223 was extremly muzzle heavy and now with one and a half pounds of bondo/birdshot balances much better. My next project is to bed the action.
