Ammo and brass situation?
« on: July 21, 2009, 09:32:11 AM »
What's the ammo, brass, and primers situation in your area?

I couldn't find new 375H&H brass about a year ago, but now it's abundant.

Now I'm having trouble finding Remington 45acp brass.

What are you seeing?

I'm seeing ammo and reloading stuff pop up from time to time unexpectedly now.  Like in spurts.  Loaded ammo is on the shelves a tad longer than it was, reloading stuff goes pretty fast yet, and primers see to still be a problem, when they show up it's not your favorite stuff...it's what they got.  A bunch of loaded 45 acp showed up on the shelves a few weeks ago.  It's better than it was, but still empty spots on the shelves most times.  22lr ammo is back in the form of CCI mini mags now and some Federal,  and lot's of 22 mag ammo yet of all kinds.

That's at the local shops in SW Michigan.

Gun shows in tulsa area is full of the stuff but they are trying to double the retail price. Our local wally world has Remington Hp 550 pks 16.64, dealers at gun show are asking 33.00 same stuff. Best to know the going retail price less you pay too much.

The availibity of ammo depends on where and when you go.  I recently made a trip, stopping at every gun/sporting goods store I could and found basicly the same thing in all of them.  No .380, no .357 Sig, no small rifle or pistol primers and shortages of most powders.  It seemed I got the same answer at most places, "we had plenty last week but it sold out the first (sencond) day, this was the answer in both large and small stores.

I talked to a lady locksmith today, she owns a retail store that deals in new and used safes.  She told me I would be susprised at the number of people now buying safes to store ammo.  People are worried and uncertain as to what the future holds and "want to be stocked up in case."  I think this is the general opinion of more people today than ever in the past, I went to the eye doctor a few weeks ago, he told me had never owned a gun in his life but now has an AR and two hand guns.

Went into Sports Authority Friday evening and they had had a ton of the pistol stuff that had been in short supply - about 8 boxes of 9mm, about as many .45 ACP, and probably 20+ boxes of .40 S&W.  They also had both Winchester and Remington .223 Win and a few bricks of Remington .22LR.  I didn't check anywhere else but that store is normally cleaned out.  I think things are starting to even out a bit.

I went to Bass Pro a week ago and the shelves of ammo were looking much better. Even had bricks of .22's,and boxes of 45-70's, .223, 30-06, 30-30 for decient pricing. The shortage looks like it is coming to an end soon.

Reloading has been a life saver in these lean times, except for the primers issue.

Prices will be dirt cheap when the shelves are over-stocked, because most have been hoarding and don't need anything for a few years.

Everything is still in very short supply in my neck of the woods. The local WalMart has nothing and hasn't had in months. I was in the Roswell, NM, WalMart 2 weeks ago and they had a few 550 packs of .22 Rem. Golden bullets at $18 but that was about it. I stopped in there last Friday on my way home. They still had some.

Shelves in my area are holding some of the off-brand ammo, but most Rem, Fed, and Win goes as fast as it's set out.

In my area I can find some reloading supplies of some in any caliber to get me by, but no primers yet.  Hopefully someday we'll see them again.

I walked into one of the local gun shops yesterday and was shocked to find a fairly good supply of both small rifle and pistol primers.  He also had a fair amount of ammo.  To prevent hoarding and give everyone a chance to get a few primers he would only sell 200 at a time, I picked up two hundred of each and a box of Winchester Law Enforcement .357 Sig. (125gr SXT)

According to the owner, things are looking up.  He said the distributor told him they were getting more ammo and reloading supplies in now and that MAYBE the shock of the election and hoarding trend is over.
