454 casull loads with heavy bullets
« on: July 15, 2009, 10:10:49 AM »
Hi
Does anyone load some 454 casull bullets in the 380-430 gr?
I'm thinking in a brutal stop charge in the 1200-1300 fps range at very close distance for big hogs.
Thank's in advance

Hodgdon has a great resource for reloading.

The biggest problem you may have is stabilizing these extremely heavy bullets, its easy enough to get to the velocity you ask for but you probably will not be gaining any penetration over a 350 to 360gr bullet that will stabilize for sure. The other thing is in the Linebaugh penetration test he proved over and over that 1200fps will get you max penetration, going faster flattens trajectory (almost imperceptibly) and increases recoil a lot. If I was making a nasty stopper load I would probably load a 360gr WLN bullet at 1250fps or so, this would also allow for faster follow up shots than a 410gr at 1350fps would. But then I honestly would probably run a 300 to 335gr bullet at 1100fps in my 45 colts and a 425gr WLNPB at 1050fps in my 475 Linebaugh. You don't need to max out these big bore to make them effective.

I dont care for bullets over 350 grain in the 45s and in most cases accuracy declines if you go heavier. A good 300-350 hardcast lfn or swc at 1200-1400 fps is going to rip through about anything anyway.
